Drawing on a deep understanding of neuroscience and rigorous scientific methods, the Educational Neuroscience Lab uses state-of-the-art brain measurement and analysis technologies to investigate the brain mechanisms that underlie education and learning. Through designing effective learning methods and developing educational approaches that increase motivation to learn, the lab aims to return its findings broadly to society. Its mission also includes training specialists who combine knowledge of anatomy and physiology with advanced brain measurement skills, and who can investigate the mechanisms of learning and education with neuroscience at the core.

The Environmental Ecology Lab is a field within the Division of Environmental Coexistence at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and it accepts students through the School of Public Health in the Graduate School of Medicine. Various pathogenic microorganisms in the environment cause infectious diseases, and epidemics of infectious diseases affect society and bring about change. Much remains unknown about how pathogens emerge in the environment, including inside the bodies of animals, and what ecology they have; the lab uses ecological methods to analyze the relationships between individual pathogenic microorganisms and the various factors involved in infectious diseases.

The lab focuses on issues related to genetic medicine, medical genetics, and genetic counseling. Its work includes a variety of studies of families of patients with hereditary diseases, genetics education and research to improve genetic literacy, and the ethical issues of prenatal diagnosis and preimplantation genetic diagnosis. The professional degree program of the School of Public Health includes a Genetic Counselor Course that trains specialists in the field. The lab also plays a central role in clinical care, education, and research at the Division of Clinical Genetics at the University Hospital.

The lab teaches and conducts research under the theme of making communication a pillar of public health. Its interests include not only communication between doctors and patients, but also peer support, communication and collaboration with AI, and the influence of culture on health communication. The lab also teaches practical exercises in qualitative research, which students in medical programs rarely have the chance to learn. Each student carries out research on a topic of their own interest.

As a pioneer in management of technology education in the life sciences, the lab trains people who can handle the discovery, management, and utilization of intellectual property. To create innovative drugs and medical devices originating in Japan, it is important to connect the results of basic research at universities and other institutions to industry. This requires entrepreneurs and intellectual property managers who can secure research results as intellectual property rights and make the most of them in industry.

Building on Kyoto University's specialized division for health management and occupational health, the lab provides education and research in occupational medicine. Here, "kosei" (welfare) means that people live healthy, fulfilling lives. Students receive direct research guidance from practicing occupational physicians and health management physicians, and learn while engaging with the latest information in occupational medicine.

The Human Ecology (Field Medicine) Lab is a research area within the Division of Environmental Coexistence at the Center for Southeast Asian Studies, and it accepts students through the Department of Public Health in the Graduate School of Medicine. "Field medicine" is a research area that seeks to reconsider the nature of disease and aging in relation to the natural environment and cultural background. Based on fieldwork, the lab examines how health is understood, and what conditions of illness and daily life look like, across different natural environments, histories, cultures, and societies, and explores forms of medicine rooted in people's everyday lives.

The brain cannot function with a single region alone; the functions of individual regions must be integrated through the circuits formed among them. The lab studies the higher-order brain functions that arise when the functions of brain regions are integrated, and the mechanisms behind the symptoms that appear when they are disrupted, with the goal of leading to improved symptoms.

The Immunology and Genomic Medicine Lab tackles fundamental questions in immunology, such as how vaccines are able to prevent infectious diseases. Students and postdocs here work at the forefront of research worldwide and seek to tackle the fundamentals of immunity. The lab aims to train independent researchers who learn experimental methods in molecular biology and immunology and have the ability to view life as a whole.

The Pulmonary Morphogenesis lab approaches fundamental phenomena of life through research on the development and regeneration of the respiratory system. The respiratory system functions when cells that have differentiated into branching bronchi and small sac-like structures are properly arranged. These complex structures are built during embryonic development, and stem cells are deeply involved. Focusing in particular on the maturation of the respiratory system from late development through the neonatal period, and on regeneration after tissue injury in adults, the lab studies the mechanisms of development and regeneration that are maintained throughout life. The lab is the Pulmonary Morphogenesis Team at RIKEN, and it accepts graduate students from the Kyoto University Graduate School of Medicine through the cooperative graduate school program.
