The Agricultural Production Ecology (Farm) Lab uses the farm as its main experimental field and conducts research that contributes to the development of environmentally sustainable agriculture. Another feature is that students can learn a wide range of specialized fields, from crops to horticulture. The faculty members study the search for novel useful genes in soybean, genetic breeding and cultivation management of fruit trees, evaluation of waterlogging tolerance in crops, and the horticultural science of vegetables and flowers.

The Irrigation and Water Utilization Lab studies the soil moisture conditions of paddy and upland fields that suit crop growth, from the two perspectives of irrigation and field drainage. In recent years, the conversion of paddy fields so that they can also be used as upland fields (multipurpose conversion) has advanced, and securing drainage when converting poorly drained paddy fields to upland fields has become a challenge. To propose ways to make effective use of the large volumes of water resources and biomass used in agriculture, the lab also studies water use and biomass. The lab belongs to the Bioproduction Environment Engineering field of the School of Agriculture, and investigates water flow and water management in paddy areas through field observation.

The Water Environment Lab studies lakes, reservoirs, rivers, and coastal waters in agricultural and rural areas, with the aim of conserving the water environment and protecting regional water resources. In addition to investigating the mechanisms by which organic pollution and eutrophication degrade water quality, the lab works on flood prediction in agricultural and rural areas and on evaluating how hydraulic structures mitigate floods. The lab combines multiple methods, including field observation of water quality and hydraulics, laboratory experiments, numerical simulation, and the application of AI technologies. The lab is divided into two groups: the Enclosed Water Bodies Group and the Coastal Waters and Rivers Group.

The Soil Environment Lab studies soil and ground on the basis of soil mechanics and geoenvironmental engineering. Its subjects are agricultural and rural areas, including shallow coastal seas, and the infrastructure that supports agricultural production and rural life. The lab conducts education and research on the conservation, restoration, and creation of a sustainable soil environment. Its education and research also cover the effective use of local resources that can serve as geomaterials, and disaster prevention for farmland.

The Soil Science Lab studies soil itself, as well as its relationships with plants, the environment, and ecosystems. The lab views soil as a natural chemical substance made up of various minerals and organic matter. In the field, researchers dig pits to examine soil profiles and collect samples, then use chemical and spectroscopic analysis to determine the condition of the soil. In cultivation experiments, they grow plants in soils under different conditions to study the relationship between soil and plants.

Centered on fields such as agricultural meteorology and bio-environmental control, the Environmental Meteorology Lab studies the biological and physical phenomena that occur between plants and the meteorological environment. By clarifying and controlling these phenomena, the lab works on smart agriculture and on developing adaptation measures to climate change, aiming to achieve sustainable and highly profitable agricultural production. The lab works in laboratories, greenhouses, and experimental fields on the Kyushu University campus, as well as in rural areas such as Itoshima and elsewhere in Kyushu. It also collaborates with other universities and with prefectural and national research institutions.

The Agricultural Production System Design Lab studies the design and safety of agricultural machinery, plant measurement, and smart agriculture. Using simulation and experiments, the lab investigates the behavior of machines, such as the separation and threshing in combine harvesters and the overturning of tractors. It also works on systems that measure plant growth with images and IoT devices, and on developing robots that support farm work. The lab has a fabrication room equipped with 3D printers, laser cutters, lathes, and other tools, as well as an environment-controlled greenhouse.

The Agricultural Product and Food Distribution Engineering Lab aims to establish "postharvest engineering," a field that designs quality, safety, and efficiency together across the distribution of agricultural products and food from harvest to consumption. The lab investigates the mechanisms by which quality deteriorates and combines this with analysis using digital twins and data, working to create next-generation cold chain technologies that can be used in real-world distribution. Its research spans a wide range, from the microscopic world of cells in fresh produce to global logistics networks. In collaboration with organizations such as JICA, the lab is also conducting demonstration studies on fresh produce distribution in Africa.

The Plant Nutrition Lab studies how glycoproteins, glycoconjugates, and other substances are synthesized in plant cells and transported within the cell. Using model plant cells, crops, and medicinal plants as experimental materials, the lab investigates these processes with methods from biochemistry, cell biology, molecular biology, and plant physiology. The lab also studies the production of useful substances in genetically modified plants, from both basic and applied perspectives. Faculty of the Faculty of Agriculture belong to the lab, and they teach in the field of applied biochemistry in the School of Agriculture.

The Soil Environmental Microbiology Lab conducts basic research on the ecology and functions of microorganisms in soil and the environment, and on their roles in element cycling. The lab also carries out applied research for environmental conservation, resource utilization, and the development of sustainable production systems. Traditional fermented foods, composting, and wastewater purification all proceed through the action of diverse mixed microbial communities, but many of the microorganisms involved are difficult to culture, and the actual state of these systems is still not understood. The lab traces its origins to the First Chair of Agricultural Chemistry, established in 1922, and for about 100 years it has conducted research centered on soil microorganisms.
