LOH Ping Yeap, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Ergonomics (LOH Ping Yeap) Lab is the lab of Assistant Professor LOH Ping Yeap, who specializes in ergonomics and occupational therapy. The professor is listed as a faculty member of the Industrial Design Course in the Department of Design in the School of Design, and of the Human Life Design Course in the Department of Design in the Graduate School of Design. In the Faculty of Design, the professor belongs to the Human Life Design Division.
Yoshito Ogata, Professor
0 student voices
The Industrial Design (Yoshito Ogata) Lab studies the concepts and methods of design based on the practice of industrial design and product design. The lab designs communication devices, home appliances, furniture, measuring instruments, medical devices, and more in practice, and aims to build from that work the concepts and methods needed for design practice. The lab views the process and techniques of design as "Ka, Kata, Katachi, Kachi," and considers better ways of making things by accumulating designs of "things" for people. In addition, the lab works on future concept design, speculative design, resilience design, and the history of design methods.
Toru Koga, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Toru Koga studies design from the standpoints of philosophy, ethics, and aesthetics. Specifically, the lab works on research on epistemology, ontology, ethics, and aesthetics in design. In addition, the lab studies, from a philosophical perspective, the problem of reason taking on a violent nature, as well as love and sex. The professor also serves as director of the Research Center for Fundamental Design Studies, which aims to establish the identity of design by thinking about what design is from the ground up.
Mia Nakamura, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Nakamura's Cultural Policy Lab takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying the processes and mechanisms through which arts and culture bring change to people and society. The lab is especially interested in the relationship between art and care, facilitation, and evaluation. It has also carried out a great deal of research on gender, sexuality, diversity, and inclusion. The lab considers what can be done to create a society in which different people can go on living as different people.
Chihiro Hiramatsu, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Hiramatsu's lab studies color vision diversity. The lab views color vision diversity as the result of interaction between genes and the environment. It investigates the neural mechanisms in the brain that create the subjective experience of color, which is difficult to share with other people. Through this work, the lab aims to understand the meaning of color experience.
Osamu Maruyama, Professor
0 student voices
This lab studies bioinformatics, which analyzes genome sequence data, the blueprint of living organisms, with methods from information science. To understand organisms built according to genome sequences as systems, it is necessary to clarify the various structures, mechanisms, and functions that organisms have. To that end, the lab develops algorithms that find hypotheses and rules in accumulated genome data and investigates them through computational experiments. In education, the lab's goal is to train information scientists who understand biology.
Takehiko Minato, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Takehiko Minato is a faculty member of the School of Design who specializes in screenwriting. Professor Minato is listed as a faculty member of the Future Concept Design Course at the undergraduate level and of the Future Coexistence Design Course at the graduate level. The Future Concept Design Course teaches artistic expression, social planning, and information and life sciences, and develops the ability to plan and put into practice new social systems and services that did not exist before. A School announcement notes that a film for which Professor Minato wrote the screenplay will be available exclusively on Prime Video from October 23.
Hiroshi Ito, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Hiroshi Ito conducts research that discovers the phenomena underlying biological rhythms and elucidates their mechanisms both mathematically and experimentally. Organisms studied include cyanobacteria, plants, squid, and jellyfish. In classes, Associate Professor Ito teaches programming and simulation in the Future Concept Design Course and chronobiology in the Future Coexistence Design Course. Through running the "Geiko Art & Science Cafe," the lab is also engaged in science communication.
Daisuke Inoe, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Associate Professor Daisuke Inoe studies how the cytoskeleton, which controls cell shape, orientation, and movement, assembles itself. Using in vitro reconstitution systems, the lab investigates the mechanisms of cytoskeletal self-assembly. The lab also works on protein engineering using DNA nanotechnology and synthetic biology, taking on the design of proteins that can be controlled externally and proteins with new functions. By combining methods from biology with those from chemistry and engineering, the lab aims to artificially build molecular systems that function like cells (molecular robots).
Hitoshi Kuriyama, Associate Professor
0 student voices
In the contemporary art lab of Associate Professor Hitoshi Kuriyama, students explore what concepts such as "nothingness" and "existence" mean through the creation of artworks. The lab also works to systematize the basic elements common to all forms of artistic expression, with the aim of clarifying the "order of beauty." The lab sees an artwork as a kind of "lens" that reflects the world as something different, through which viewers form a new view of the world. In teaching, the lab covers how to generate ideas for artworks, how to develop a concept, how to apply basic elements of form, and the practice of exhibiting work.
