Yoshitaka Sugimoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Industrial Design Lab (Prof. Sugimoto) studies every kind of design related to industry. Industrial design takes as its subjects not only objects, UI/UX, services, and brands, but also business, management, and the structures of society. Together with companies and local governments, the lab carries out design research and practical projects on products, services, brands, regional revitalization, and the revitalization of regional industries. Drawing on about 20 years of experience designing products, services, and brands at a major home appliance manufacturer, the professor develops ideas and methodologies for the next generation of design.

Ryoichi Tamura, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Tamura's lab studies what desirable design should be like and how design development should proceed. The lab organizes the relationships between the objects and experiences being designed and the people who make and use them, and examines them through survey and analysis. Recently, with the aim of improving people's quality of life, the lab has mainly dealt with themes related to services, older adults, and energy.

Shigekazu Higuchi, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Shigekazu Higuchi's lab aims to understand the genetic and physiological characteristics that humans have as living organisms. The lab is interested in how these characteristics are affected by differences in an individual's growth and living environment. Its main research themes are “light, sleep, and biological rhythms” and “the brain and sensibility.” The lab believes that the human characteristics revealed in this way will lead to proposals for suitable environments and lifestyles.

The Functional Engineering Lab studies the design and development of tools and devices, using childcare support, facilities for older adults, and disaster situations as its settings. In childcare support, the lab has developed an electric baby crib for infants, and it examines how motion and sound soothe infants through behavioral observation and heart rate measurement. For facilities for older adults, the lab researches a system that automatically measures food intake. For disaster situations, it researches a human-powered back-carrying device for disaster preparedness. In the researcher profile, its research fields are listed as design engineering and design studies.

Takafumi Maeda, Professor

The physiological anthropology lab studies how the physiological characteristics humans have as living organisms are affected by lifestyle and living environment. It is also interested in whether those effects represent adaptation to the environment. The lab examines thermoregulatory and circulatory responses when people are exposed to cold, heat, and low-pressure, low-oxygen environments, as well as the relationship between bathing and sleep. It aims to create healthy and comfortable environments and lifestyles for people living today.

Akane Matsumae, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Akane Matsumae's lab views society as an interweaving of "relationships" and, with a focus on people and design processes, studies the mechanisms by which relationships move and change. The lab also takes on the challenge of visualizing these mechanisms with engineering methods and evaluating them quantitatively. Including the business field, the lab carries out projects on the "dynamic design of relationships," aimed at a society of well-being, and develops and tests the methodology for it.

Satoshi Muraki, Professor

The Welfare Ergonomics Lab studies the products, environments, and health of people with physical impairments (especially those with limited mobility) from the perspectives of ergonomics and exercise physiology. Its subjects include not only older adults and people with physical disabilities but also people whose physical activity is temporarily limited by injury, illness, fatigue, pregnancy, or child-rearing. The lab is committed to scientifically investigating assistive devices, universal design, barrier-free design, living environments, and prevention of the need for long-term care, and to making evidence-based proposals. In recent years, it has been studying human adaptability to assistive technology.

SARANTOU Melanie, Professor
0 student voices
The Strategic Design Lab is led by Professor Melanie Sarantou, whose specialties are strategic design and social design. At the graduate level, the professor is a faculty member of the Strategic Design Course in the Department of Design, Graduate School of Design. This course is introduced as one that designs the economy and society of the future by combining design, business, and entrepreneurship. At the undergraduate level, the professor is listed as a faculty member of the Industrial Design Course in the Department of Design, School of Design.

Naoshige Naoshige, Associate Professor

The Design Engineering Lab studies the design of living spaces and the products that make them up. Drawing on experience in product planning and development of office furniture at a manufacturer, the lab aims to build ways of thinking and methodologies for making things. In joint research, the lab develops new products with manufacturers using inclusive design methods and systemic design thinking. The lab carries out education and research while moving back and forth between the practice of product design and the theorization of design.
Takafumi Katsumura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Takafumi Katsumura specializes in molecular anthropology, evolutionary biology, and experimental population genetics. His research fields are listed as animal physiological chemistry, physiology, and behavior; biodiversity and taxonomy; biological anthropology; and genetics. The keywords for his research themes include experimental population genetics, epigenetics, medaka, human evolution, and molecular evolution.
