Tomohiro Sakotsubo, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Tomohiro Sakotsubo's lab studies the relationship between the design of public transportation and society. Assistant Professor Sakotsubo has worked in design practice at a design firm, on public transportation vehicles, consumer devices, and industrial machinery. Drawing on this experience, the lab investigates the relationship between the design process and design philosophy at the planning stage, and design evaluation based on how things are actually used after implementation. The lab also puts effort into developing people who can put into practice in society the School's educational and research philosophy of "the humanization of technology."

Kenichi Sawai, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Kenichi Sawai specializes in mathematical engineering and studies how temporal information obtained through vision and hearing is perceived. Using Bayesian models and causal inference as clues, the lab studies how temporal information from vision and hearing is integrated into perception, and it also develops psychophysical experiment methods for studying perception. In the School of Design, Assistant Professor Sawai teaches mathematics-related courses, including mathematical statistics. In the graduate school, Assistant Professor Sawai teaches courses in human informatics, which is the area of specialty. Depending on the year, Assistant Professor Sawai also teaches project courses on topics such as music informatics, mathematical design, and Kansei modeling.

Eigo Nishimura, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The lab led by Assistant Professor Eigo Nishimura studies methods for observing, in numerical form, how people behave when they use tools and devices, using video analysis technology. Behavioral observation is a design research method for finding what to improve in tools and devices, but it requires observer experience and a great deal of effort. The lab aims to reduce the effort of observation and make its results more objective through video analysis. The lab develops applications that support behavioral observation, and also uses them in joint development with companies and in R&D consulting.

Yasuyuki Hayama, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Yasuyuki Hayama of the Strategic Design division studies story-driven design and innovation in the interdisciplinary area between design and management. At the core of the research is an approach called Design Narrative Worldmaking (DNW), in which design is carried out with stories as its axis. The research keywords include Product-Service System Design (PSSD) and transition design for sustainability.

Yuki Motomura, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The lab led by Assistant Professor Yuki Motomura works with the keywords Kansei, emotion, empathy, and sleep. It investigates through what mechanisms mental functions arise, and what role those functions have played in human survival. The lab approaches these questions from Kansei science, physiological anthropology, and neuroscience. Its goal is to clarify how Kansei and emotion work, and to give those findings back toward the realization of a society of well-being.

LOH Ping Yeap, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor LOH Ping Yeap belongs to the Human Life Design Division of the Faculty of Design, and specializes in ergonomics and occupational therapy. In the faculty directory, the professor is listed as teaching in the Industrial Design Course at the undergraduate level and in the Human Life Design Course at the graduate level.

Yoshito Ogata, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Ogata's lab practices industrial design and product design for items such as communication devices, home appliances, furniture, measuring instruments, and medical equipment. Based on that practice, the lab aims to build concepts and methods for design practice. The lab views the processes and techniques of design as "Ka, Kata, Katachi, Kachi," and continues to design "things" for people. It has also recently begun working on future-oriented design, speculative design, resilience design, and the history of design methods.

Toru Koga, Professor
0 student voices
Prof. Koga studies epistemology, ontology, ethics, and aesthetics in design. The professor also approaches, from a philosophical standpoint, the problem of reason taking on a violent character, as well as questions of love and sex. The professor serves as director of the Center for Fundamental Design Studies, which examines from the ground up what design is.

Mia Nakamura, Professor
0 student voices
The lab led by Mia Nakamura takes an interdisciplinary approach to studying the processes and mechanisms through which arts and culture bring about change in people and society. It is particularly interested in the relationship between art and care, facilitation, and evaluation. Its topics include arts activities in dementia care settings and the value and evaluation of arts and culture. The lab considers what can be done to build a society in which different people can live as they are, with their differences intact.

Chihiro Hiramatsu, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Chihiro Hiramatsu, who specializes in visual physiology and perception, studies diversity in color vision. Regarding diversity as an essential characteristic of humans as living beings, the lab views diversity in color vision as the result of interaction between genes and the environment. It investigates the neural mechanisms that give rise to the subjective experience of color, which is difficult to share with others, and aims to understand the meaning of color experience.
