Akane Matsumae, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Professor Akane Matsumae views society as an interweaving of relationships and studies their dynamic mechanisms. Focusing on people and design processes, the lab investigates how relationships change and move. It also takes on the challenge of visualizing these mechanisms and evaluating them quantitatively using engineering methods. Through education, joint research, and commissioned research, the lab runs a wide range of practical projects aimed at a society of well-being.

Satoshi Muraki, Professor
0 student voices
The Welfare Ergonomics Lab studies the products, environments, and health of people with physical limitations from the perspectives of ergonomics and exercise physiology. Its subjects include not only older adults and people with physical disabilities but also people whose physical activity is temporarily restricted by injury, illness, fatigue, pregnancy, or child-rearing. The lab takes a scientific approach to assistive devices, universal design, barrier-free design, living environments, and care prevention, and puts great effort into making proposals based on scientific evidence. In recent years, it has been studying human adaptability to assistive technology.

SARANTOU Melanie, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Professor Melanie Sarantou specializes in strategic design and social design. The professor is listed as a faculty member of the Industrial Design Course in the School of Design and of the Strategic Design Course in the Graduate School of Design. In the Faculty of Design, the professor belongs to the Strategic Design Division.

Naoshige Naoshige, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Naoshige Naoshige's lab studies and teaches the design of living spaces and the products that make them up. Drawing on experience in product planning and development of office furniture at a manufacturer, the lab aims to build ways of thinking about and methods for making things. In collaborative research, the lab develops new products with manufacturers, using inclusive design methods and the ideas of systemic design. To establish a framework for design engineering, the lab pursues education and research while moving back and forth between product design practice and the theorization of design.

Takafumi Katsumura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Molecular Anthropology Lab (Associate Professor Takafumi Katsumura) has experimental population genetics, epigenetics, medaka, human evolution, and molecular evolution as its research themes. Kyushu University's researcher information lists the research fields as animal physiological chemistry, physiology, ethology, diversity biology, taxonomy, physical anthropology, and genetics. In 2026, Associate Professor Katsumura published a paper examining the relationship between seasonal changes in intestinal length and DNA methylation in medaka.

Kazuya Saito, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kazuya Saito specializes in digital fabrication and mechanical engineering. Associate Professor Saito is listed as a faculty member of the Industrial Design Course in the School of Design and of the Human Life Design Course in the Graduate School of Design.

Toshifumi Saito, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Toshifumi Saito's lab studies how communication comes about and how social meaning and value are shaped through it. Besides advertising, the lab covers a wide range of cultural phenomena, including film and video, contemporary art, museums, photography, literature, and subculture. Associate Professor Saito has worked as a creative director on advertising and cultural projects, and he analyzes that practice as a research subject and organizes it into theory.

Yanfang Zhang, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The universal design lab studies systems for designing together and growing together while respecting diversity, guided by the principle of "leaving no one behind." Methods and possibilities for putting the outcomes of design workshops into social implementation are also among its research subjects. Associate Professor Yanfang Zhang practiced universal design in the field of design and now pursues research in an educational setting. Associate Professor Zhang is also involved in building the framework of a global design network, a worldwide base for design education and research, and works with industry and research institutions in Japan and abroad.

Haruka Sogabe, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Haruka Sogabe's lab specializes in public design and studies the design of elements of places and spaces used by an unspecified large number of people, such as signage and street furniture. The lab handles both clearly defined design, such as creating design guidelines for local public relations materials and signage, and design in which the focus is chosen amid changing issues and technologies and then given form. As preparation for design, the lab emphasizes objectively grasping, analyzing, and examining a situation, and it carries out its research with "zure," the gaps in how people perceive things depending on their position, as a keyword. The lab believes that designers recognizing these perception gaps helps them win understanding of a design proposal from many people.

Takayuki Nishimura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Takayuki Nishimura studies the environmental adaptability of modern humans from the standpoint of physiological anthropology. The research theme is "the environmental adaptability of modern humans," and the keywords are environmental adaptation, cold, high altitude, and physiological diversity. According to an academic society's introduction of an award, the lab investigates the relationship between physiological diversity and genetic factors in evolution and adaptation, through studies of cold adaptation and high-altitude adaptation. The lab is also described as working on joint research with companies, aimed at improving the lives and promoting the health of people living today.
