The Animal Nutritional Physiology Lab studies heat stress in chickens, a major threat to the poultry industry. The lab has identified physiological and metabolic indicators related to heat stress, and has found amino acids that play a role in body temperature regulation, including L-citrulline, L-leucine, and taurine. In addition to amino acids, the lab also focuses on neuropeptide Y and related peptides, which regulate stress and immune function.

The Insect Food Science Lab studies the development of sustainable food, feed, and pharmaceuticals using insect factories and genetic technology. Using genetic recombination and genome editing, the lab aims to raise the value of insects and put them to practical use as resources for food and feed. The lab is also developing technologies that use insects to produce new functional substances, such as biopeptides and oral vaccines. The lab is working to apply these technologies to food security and pharmaceuticals.

The International Rural Development Lab studies, from the perspective of international rural development, changes in people's behavior and the process by which new technologies are accepted by society. In the fields of agriculture, the environment, and international development, the lab empirically clarifies, based on data, how institutions and policies affect society and the economy. Through field experiments conducted in real-world settings, the lab carries out research that contributes to evidence-based policymaking (EBPM). The lab has many international students from Asia and Africa.

Based on "biotechnology × insects," the Insect Industry Creation Lab works on analyzing insect components, isolating active ingredients, and efficiently producing useful substances (mainly recombinant proteins). The technological foundation is a recombinant protein production system, mainly using the silkworm-baculovirus expression system. The lab conducts research on protein design, improvement and functional modification of silkworms (the hosts that carry out production), and industrialization (real-world application).

The Medical Entomology Lab studies arthropods such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies, which are among the public health insects that harm people from a public health standpoint, as well as the viruses these arthropods carry and transmit. The lab aims to deepen understanding of "insects that people dislike" and to control them well so that daily life improves. To control infectious diseases, vector control, which means controlling the insects that carry pathogens (vectors), is considered the most effective approach. As a lab of the Center for Insect Science and New Industry Creation, it conducts research and education in collaboration with the other labs in the center.

The Aqua-Field Science Lab is based at the Fishery Research Laboratory near the coast in Tsuyazaki, Fukutsu, and studies aquatic organisms and their environments. The Fishery Research Laboratory is a shared-use facility built for education and research at sites where marine organisms live. Students of the Faculty of Agriculture and researchers from inside and outside the university visit for hands-on laboratory training and research. The lab conducts field surveys of ecosystems, mainly of fishes, and research on the spawning and development of marine invertebrates as well as on rearing, aquaculture, and stock enhancement techniques. It is basically a lab that students join from graduate school, but in some cases undergraduates can also take part in research.

The lab studies enclosed water bodies such as lakes, reservoirs, and aquaculture ponds, working to clarify how fluid phenomena within these waters relate to water quality changes, heavy metal contamination, and diseases in aquatic systems. In recent years, the lab has also used ICT equipment for image monitoring and image analysis of aquatic environments to detect environmental changes and visualize signs of anomalies. The lab conducts on-site observation and sampling of changes in water environments in Thailand, Vietnam, and Bangladesh. Associate Professor Akinori Ozaki belongs to the International Development Division of the Tropical Agriculture Research Center, and his specialty is environmental hydraulics and water quality science.
