The Insect DX Lab uses digital technologies to aim for a transformation of business models in response to insect-related social problems facing modern society. Its work covers automating insect species identification, adding higher value to insect resources by digitizing specimen data, assessing insect diversity using DX, and promoting DX through collaboration with insect science-related fields. As a short-term goal, the lab aims to automate outbreak forecasting for stable flies and Calliphora nigribarbis using deep learning-based object detection, leading to prompt and appropriate pest control. As a long-term goal, it aims to infer how biodiversity will change under climate change, using data such as distribution data from insect specimen collections.

The Microbial Control of Insect Pests Lab conducts both basic and applied research on entomopathogenic microorganisms that act as natural enemies of pest insects. Its work includes isolating pathogenic microorganisms from diseased insects to identify them, and selecting strains that show high control effects against pest insects. The lab also studies ways to prevent infectious diseases in insects reared in large numbers, such as silkworms and honeybees, as well as the mechanisms by which insects protect themselves from pathogenic microorganisms. Graduate students can enter or advance to the lab through the Graduate School of Bioresource and Bioenvironmental Sciences, and undergraduates in the Agronomy Field of the Bioresource Production Science Course in the School of Agriculture can also conduct graduation research here under certain conditions.

The lab studies the biological control of pests using parasitoid and predatory natural enemy insects, from both basic and applied perspectives. Natural enemy insects include predators, which capture and eat other insects, and parasitoids, which lay eggs on or in other insects. Prof. Tuda studies population fluctuations and evolution of pests and their natural enemies, as well as pest control using nanomaterials. Associate Professor Ueno studies the behavior, ecology, and life history of parasitoid wasps, and also works on pest control methods that use natural enemies.

The lab studies how alien insects become pests in new locations, and how to control them. It also works on assessing the impact of invading organisms on other organisms and ecosystems, plant quarantine technologies to prevent invasions, and the development of control methods for invasive pests. It also studies the behavior and ecology of parasitoid wasps, which are especially useful natural enemies for controlling invasive pests, and how to use them. Besides Japan, the lab conducts field surveys and laboratory experiments in Southeast Asia, Africa, and the United States.

The lab specializes in phytotronics, academic research centered on bioenvironmental control technology. Full-time faculty at the Experimental Bioenvironment Control Center conduct research and teach graduate students about advanced plant production systems such as plant factories. Research topics include domestic production of medicinal plants, vegetable cultivation using artificial light and LEDs, and plant production for fragrance raw materials. Because the lab does not belong to an undergraduate school, it accepts students starting in the graduate master's program.

The Tropical Crop Science and Environment Lab conducts a wide range of research set in tropical regions, covering crops, the water environment, insects, and the management of natural resources. For tropical crops such as yam and rice, the lab studies traits that raise productivity, aiming to lead to the development of cultivation techniques. For ants, the lab studies species diversity in tropical Asia based on specimens collected in the field. The Institute of Tropical Agriculture, to which the lab belongs, provides graduate students with research and education that make use of fieldwork sites in Asia.

The Insect Food Science Lab studies the development of sustainable food, feed, and pharmaceuticals using insect factories and genetic technology. Using genetic recombination and genome editing, the lab aims to raise the value of insects and put them to practical use as resources for food and feed. The lab is also developing technologies that use insects to produce new functional substances, such as biopeptides and oral vaccines. The lab is working to apply these technologies to food security and pharmaceuticals.

Based on "biotechnology × insects," the Insect Industry Creation Lab works on analyzing insect components, isolating active ingredients, and efficiently producing useful substances (mainly recombinant proteins). The technological foundation is a recombinant protein production system, mainly using the silkworm-baculovirus expression system. The lab conducts research on protein design, improvement and functional modification of silkworms (the hosts that carry out production), and industrialization (real-world application).

The Medical Entomology Lab studies arthropods such as mosquitoes, ticks, and flies, which are among the public health insects that harm people from a public health standpoint, as well as the viruses these arthropods carry and transmit. The lab aims to deepen understanding of "insects that people dislike" and to control them well so that daily life improves. To control infectious diseases, vector control, which means controlling the insects that carry pathogens (vectors), is considered the most effective approach. As a lab of the Center for Insect Science and New Industry Creation, it conducts research and education in collaboration with the other labs in the center.
