The Silkworm Genetic Resources Lab maintains research silkworms in a wide variety of strains and conducts research using them. The lab holds about 800 strains, which its website describes as the most diverse collection in the world. It compares silkworms with unusual traits, such as a different cocoon color or larval body color, with normal silkworms to investigate why these differences arise. The lab accepts only graduate students and above; it has no undergraduate students and does not assign fourth-year undergraduates.

The Eukaryotic Cell Microbiology Lab uses methylotrophic yeast to study the mechanisms that control cell division and sexual reproduction. Yeasts are industrially useful microorganisms, and research on them as model organisms has contributed greatly to understanding the cell cycle, protein transport, and more. The lab works with Ogataea polymorpha, which is evolutionarily distant from the well-studied budding yeast. It studies how this yeast switches its mating type and how it controls the progression of cell division.

The Plant Genetic Resources Lab conducts genetics and plant breeding research on collecting and generating useful genetic resources in crops, and on developing, preserving, and managing their traits. The lab holds that crop improvement requires useful genetic resources, and that it is important both to collect cultivated varieties widely from around the world and to create resources by inducing artificial mutations and clarify their traits. Specifically, the lab works on genetic analysis of how storage proteins accumulate in rice seeds, development of rice mutant lines, and the preservation and characterization of rice landraces.
