The Information Biology Lab studies the mechanisms that switch gene expression ON and OFF, and their evolution. Because gene expression switches tend to be conserved through evolution, they can be found by comparing the genome sequences of various animals such as humans and mice. In addition to genome sequences, the lab integrates and analyzes tissue-specific gene expression data and information on genome modifications, aiming to clarify the details of regulatory mechanisms and their evolution. The lab hopes to apply its findings to clarifying the causes of diseases thought to arise from abnormal regulation of gene expression.

The Mucosal Defense Lab comprehensively investigates the cells that make up intestinal tissue and their functions, aiming for an integrated understanding of the intestinal immune system. Mucosal surfaces such as those of the respiratory and digestive tracts are sites in broad contact with the external environment, and they are also the main entry routes for pathogens and allergens. The intestine hosts many coexisting gut bacteria, which are known to be involved in the maturation of the immune system and in metabolism. The lab carries out its research in collaboration with research institutions inside and outside the institute.
