Mitsuhiro Murayama, Professor (Cross-appointment)

The Nanomaterials and Device Science Lab uses electron beams to observe, at the nanometer scale, the arrangement of the atoms and microstructures that make up a specimen. Its research centers on "in situ observation," in which changes in microstructure, functions, and mechanical properties are watched in real time while heat, light, external force, and other stimuli are applied. By combining this with data science and computational methods, the lab aims to establish microscopy techniques that can be used to explore unknown materials and evaluate their functions. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Murayama Lab."

The Electronic Systems Engineering Lab researches electronic displays and related technologies. The lab's website says it studies any technology related to electronic displays, from organic EL displays to electronic paper. Besides flexible transparent organic EL displays and micro-LED displays, the lab also works on biosensors and wireless power transfer using capacitive coupling. Lab visits are accepted at any time, and students who want to do research there take the entrance exam for the master's or doctoral program of the Device Science and Engineering major at the Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences.

The Advanced Fusion Information and Control Science and Engineering Lab researches how to confine and control plasma hotter than 100 million degrees for fusion power generation. Using QUEST, the spherical tokamak device at the Research Institute for Applied Mechanics, Kyushu University, the lab develops diagnostics that measure heat and particle flows inside the plasma, as well as control methods based on machine learning. On the lab's website, it is introduced as the research group "IdoHasegawaKinoshita Lab." of Professor Takeshi Ido, Associate Professor Makoto Hasegawa, and Assistant Professor Toshiki Kinoshita. In graduate school, the lab provides graduate education as the "High-Temperature Plasma Properties and Control Engineering Lab" of the Plasma and Quantum Science and Engineering major, Department of Interdisciplinary Engineering Sciences, Interdisciplinary Graduate School of Engineering Sciences.

The Simulation Plasma Physics Lab studies plasma turbulence, which is important in fusion plasmas, through computer simulation. Its specialty is simulation of fusion plasmas, but the lab aims to pioneer new research methods spanning science to engineering, including space plasmas. In the same field of fusion simulation, the Fujisawa Lab does experimental research and the Kasuya Lab does numerical computation. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Kasuya Lab."

The Environmental Fluid Systems Lab studies a wide range of phenomena in the atmosphere and ocean using laboratory experiments, field observations, and numerical simulations. The lab works to clarify processes near the sea surface that govern the exchange of momentum and CO2 between the atmosphere and the ocean. It investigates the causes of phenomena that harm coastal ecosystems, such as red tides and hypoxic water masses, with the aim of designing countermeasure technologies. The lab also develops ocean condition forecasting systems that assess how the coastal marine environment will change in the near future.

The Plasma Applied Science and Engineering Research Group (Hayashi Lab) researches new technologies that apply plasma to medicine, biotechnology, agriculture, and the environment. Because plasma is short-lived, it allows safe and harmless applications without the concern of residual agents, unlike chemicals. The lab develops sterilizers for medical instruments and disinfection devices for agricultural products, and also pursues research on promoting plant growth, killing cancer cells, and activating immune cells.

The Optical Device Engineering Lab studies semiconductor lasers with the goal of opening up a new world of lasers. It aims for leaps that would change conventional assumptions about existing lasers by at least three orders of magnitude, advancing its research with an eye on everything from proposing theory to experimental demonstration and practical use in society. Research themes include a full-color laser that emits red, blue, and green light from a single semiconductor laser and its application to optical tweezers, higher output by arranging many VCSELs, and wavelength-stable lasers for atomic clocks. Because the lab is in its start-up phase, students are also deeply involved in refining research themes and building the experimental environment.

The Environmental Energy Systems Lab studies strategies and policies that can help solve long-term energy problems, such as the world's energy supply and the environmental challenges society faces. Through the development of analytical methods and the use of computational models, the lab seeks to clarify the role that science and technology play in shaping better energy and environmental policy. Researchers from diverse backgrounds work on building decision-making frameworks that evaluate future scenarios from both "macro and micro" perspectives. The lab aims to contribute to realizing sustainable energy systems in Japan, Asia, and the world.

The Water Environment Engineering Lab (WEEL) studies the removal of pollutants from water and the generation of renewable energy from waste. Its targets include heavy metals such as arsenic and chromium, radioactive elements such as cesium and strontium, and antibiotics. The lab also researches recovering nutrients such as phosphorus and nitrate from wastewater. It also works on developing bioenergy, including methane and hydrogen production by anaerobic digestion and power generation by microbial fuel cells. The lab is a multinational research team that collaborates with scientists and engineers in Japan and other countries.
