The High-Frequency Integrated Circuits and Microwave Communication Devices Lab designs, prototypes, and evaluates integrated circuits (LSI), antennas, and filters used in wireless communication. Its research targets include low-noise integrated circuits for wireless communication, components for ultra-wideband (UWB) radio, compact antennas, and packaging technology that connects chips and antennas. Through joint research with Kyushu University's medical and dental schools and its hospital, the lab also works on developing power supply for medical sensors and in-body sensors. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Kanaya Lab."

The Microdevice Lab researches heterogeneous integration and packaging, which combine different materials, as well as room-temperature bonding technology. It also lists photonics-electronics convergence, hybrid bonding, and chiplets as research themes. The lab also works on electro-optic devices such as thin-film LNOI, and on optical and high-frequency technologies.

The Information Photonics Lab researches optical computing devices and systems that combine optical and nanoscale technologies with information technology. Building on the knowledge and experimental techniques to design and tune optical physical systems at very small scales, the lab works on developing innovative devices that function at the macroscopic scale. Its experimental work is wide-ranging, from proposing and demonstrating the basic principles of optical devices and systems to designing, building, and evaluating their functions. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Tate Lab" ("Tatelabo").

The Micro/Nano Laser Device Lab (Oki Lab) centers on laser research and works not only on using lasers but also on "making lasers." The lab works on digital fabrication with computers and on building devices that can be printed or drawn on, taking advantage of the properties of polymers (plastic materials). Its research areas also include soft optical systems based on silicone rubber, fluorescence-based detection of disease in sweet potatoes, and terahertz-wave wireless communication. The lab holds most of its meetings remotely, and students can also learn fabrication with 3D printers and the use of AI.

The Functionality Emergence Integrated Systems Lab conducts research aimed at higher performance by incorporating new structures and new materials into semiconductor integrated circuits. Semiconductor device research requires knowledge from many fields, including mechanical engineering, chemistry, materials engineering, and electrochemistry, in addition to electronic engineering. The lab therefore pursues its research in an interdisciplinary way, from verification through simulation to fabricating actual devices and testing them. On the lab's website, it is also introduced under the name "Kino Lab."

Hiroaki Yoshioka, Associate Professor

The Circular Integrated Photonics Lab conducts research aiming for "Table-top Fabrication," in which optical devices are printed with a desktop printer. Starting from organic materials (soft materials), the lab develops "organic coherent photonics." It works on self-assembly by inkjet, mask-free processing using nano-scratching, and hybrid integration with inorganic waveguides. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yoshioka Lab."
