The lab supports care and research on heart and blood vessel diseases, from community healthcare to cutting-edge research.

AboutAbout the lab
From community healthcare to cutting-edge research
The Cardiovascular Medicine Lab addresses heart and blood vessel diseases through both clinical care and research.
The clinical research groups are divided into diagnostic imaging (CT, echocardiography, MRI, and others), PET, radioisotope (RI) studies, arrhythmia, and coronary artery disease.
Basic research covers heart failure, hypertension, and regenerative therapy for heart muscle and blood vessels, and the lab also conducts translational research aimed at clinical application.
Lab members each take charge of their own area of strength in a division-of-labor system, so both clinically oriented and research-oriented people can thrive.
Key terms
- Catheter ablation
- A treatment in which a thin tube is inserted up to the heart and the area causing the arrhythmia is burned to cure it
- PET
- A test in which a radioactive tracer is injected to create images of metabolism inside the body
- Translational research
- Research that connects findings from basic research to the point where they can be used as actual treatments

ResearchResearch themes
The lab focuses not only on daily clinical practice but also on clinical and basic research, and shares the results in Japan and abroad. The clinical research groups are divided by examination and treatment section, and basic research covers heart failure, hypertension, and regenerative therapy for heart muscle and blood vessels.
*Illustrative imageDiagnostic Imaging Group
Using tests that place little burden on the body, such as echocardiography, CT, and MRI, the group diagnoses cardiovascular disease and conducts research based on the clinical data obtained. It also works with the Department of Radiology and the Faculty of Engineering on machine learning-based diagnosis from cardiac CT images.
*Illustrative imagePET Group
Using PET scans, in which a radioactive tracer is injected to image metabolism in the body, the group assesses whether heart muscle is still viable in myocardial infarction and angina, and evaluates inflammation in conditions such as cardiac sarcoidosis and myocarditis.
*Illustrative imageArrhythmia Group
Built on three pillars (catheter ablation, pacing therapy using pacemakers and defibrillators, and drug therapy), the group works on the testing and treatment of arrhythmias.
*Illustrative imageCoronary Artery Disease Group
For patients with angina and myocardial infarction, the group handles diagnosis through cardiac catheterization and catheter-based treatment (PCI). It also performs endovascular treatment for diseases of the leg arteries.
