Hayaru Shono, Professor
0 student voices
Shono Lab studies image processing based on visual information processing, and machine learning such as neural network models and deep learning. Using how human and animal brains process information as a clue, the lab aims to build computational models. Focusing on the "expert eye" of trained engineers and physicians, the lab investigates the properties of texture images, such as microscope images of magnetic thin films. It is also considering applications of machine learning that support people in fields such as materials science. Associate Professor Daiki Kimura of IBM Japan, Ltd., an affiliated faculty member, also takes part in the lab's research.

Keiji Yanai, Professor
0 student voices
The Yanai Lab uses deep learning to study how to make computers understand the content of images and video. Beyond recognition, the lab also works on transforming and generating images, and on estimating calorie and nutrient content from meal images. The lab's research keywords are image and video recognition and generation, deep learning, Web multimedia mining, and deep learning mobile apps.

Shunsuke Kudoh, Professor
0 student voices
The Kudoh-Kimura Lab researches robots that are useful to people, collaborate with people, and entertain people in the real world. The research targets include daily-life support robots, service robots, industrial robots, humanoids, shape-changing robots, and climbing robots. Because intelligent systems cannot be built without integrating many component technologies, the faculty members combine their areas of expertise to cooperate in research and education. Professor Kudoh specializes in observing and understanding human behavior and in computer vision, and Associate Professor Kimura specializes in intelligent robotics and control.

Kohei Kimura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kimura Lab conducts research together with Professor Shunsuke Kudo as the Kudo-Kimura Lab. The lab researches robots that are useful to people, collaborate with people, and entertain people in the real world. Associate Professor Kimura's areas of expertise are intelligent robotics, control, robot software, humanoids, shape-changing robots, and climbing robots. The lab has robot arms, air hockey robots, small robot construction kits, small humanoid robots, and more.

Guanghao Sun, Faculty member
0 student voices
The Sun Lab researches technology for measuring vital signs such as heart rate, respiration, body temperature, and blood pressure without touching the person's body. Using sensors such as radar, thermography, and cameras, the lab works on methods for processing the resulting signals and images, and on practical application research for medical systems that incorporate them. Target areas include infectious diseases, home healthcare, monitoring of older adults, sleep monitoring, and animal health monitoring. The lab covers everything from system design and hardware development to biosignal processing and clinical evaluation.

Yoichi Miyawaki, Professor
0 student voices
The Miyawaki Lab studies how humans process information received through the eyes, ears, and skin to perceive their surroundings. It measures sensory perception with psychophysical experiments, records brain activity from outside the head, and analyzes it with machine learning. The lab aims to return its findings to society and use them to create things such as functional prosthetic devices for people who have lost sensory function. The lab was established in fiscal year 2012.

Yuichi Sei
0 student voices
The Sei Lab, operating as the Tahara-Sei Lab, works on four themes: agents, the intelligent Web, software engineering, and data mining. The lab's website introduces these as advanced information technology fields that will carry the sophisticated information society of the 21st century. The lab studies what the future information society should look like and the new technologies that will support it.

Taiji Marugame, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Marugame Lab studies CR geometry, a branch of geometry. The lab has studied global invariants of CR manifolds, which appear as boundaries of strictly pseudoconvex domains, using the Cheng-Yau metric on those domains. The lab has also worked on deepening and refining methods for studying CR manifolds using ambient metrics and complete Einstein metrics.

Kunihito Hoki, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Hoki Lab studies game informatics. The lab works on machine learning, game tree search, and consultation methods. Associate Professor Hoki won the 23rd World Computer Shogi Championship. At the University of Electro-Communications, research in game informatics began in earnest in August 2010.

Masaki Uto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Building on Bayesian statistics and probability theory, the Uto Lab studies artificial intelligence, machine learning, and natural language processing, from both theoretical and applied perspectives. The lab studies how to use mathematical models to remove rater-specific bias in situations where multiple people assign scores, such as written tests, interview exams, and reviews on review sites. Using deep learning and large language models, the lab also studies technology for automatically scoring short essays and for automatically generating reading comprehension questions from long texts. The lab often works with educational data, so every theme requires foundational knowledge of statistics and probability theory as well as programming skills.
