Masaki Hisano, Professor
0 student voices
The Hisano Lab's research fields are cognitive science, experimental psychology, and educational psychology. Professor Masaki Hisano studied educational psychology at the University of Tokyo and teaches courses in cognitive science and psychology at the University of Electro-Communications. In recent years, the lab has presented its language research through talks at the annual meeting of the Association for Natural Language Processing and papers on quantitative Japanese linguistics.

Koya Sato, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Sato Lab conducts research from the perspectives of wireless communications, spatiotemporal statistics, and distributed processing, looking ahead to a next-generation society in which the use of vast amounts of distributed data becomes essential infrastructure. The lab's keywords include wireless networks, Beyond 5G/6G, sensing, spatiotemporal statistics, distributed machine learning, Gaussian processes, and Bayesian optimization. The lab's news section lists papers and presentations on building radio maps and on designing wireless base stations using Bayesian optimization.

Hiroyuki Sato
0 student voices
The Sato Lab studies computer algorithms related to computational intelligence. Inspired by the mechanisms of intelligence that living organisms have acquired through evolution and learning, the lab works on evolutionary computation and on computational models based on how humans process information and learn. Starting from a deep understanding of the principles behind algorithms and improving them, the lab explores algorithms that create value not seen before. The lab also advances applications to real-world problems.

Sachiko Kodama, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Kodama Lab studies the production of media art and design works, as well as the methodology behind them. The lab works on creating interactive art that makes full use of new materials and information technology. Its past projects include art projects using ferrofluid, the Bouncing Star Ball project, and the remote theater piece "New Taketori Monogatari (The New Tale of the Bamboo Cutter)." In recent years, the lab has also exhibited works that use generative AI and researched conversational AI characters.

Maki Sakamoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Sakamoto Lab studies the development and application of "Kansei AI," AI that deals with human sensibility and feelings. The lab builds AI that expresses the texture of what it sees in onomatopoeia, and a system that detects signs of dementia using onomatopoeia. It also works on supporting early diagnosis of diseases with LLMs, and on a spatial system in which AI estimates the atmosphere of a conversation.

Kazunori Ohkawara, Laboratory Head
0 student voices
The Ohkawara Lab takes health and quality of life as its themes, and conducts research that can be put to practical use in communities and society. From the perspectives of biomedical engineering and public health, the lab invites people interested in building healthy lifestyles and healthy towns to learn together. The lab values not only research results but also learning, through research, about connections with society and the community and about working together with peers. It also carries out community-oriented activities, such as a wheat-growing project and children's cafeterias (kodomo shokudo).

Naoya Koizumi, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Koizumi Lab studies information technologies that surprise and move people in public spaces such as parks and halls. Its specialty is virtual reality, with a particular focus on how visual information is presented. In addition to aerial images, which make images float in mid-air, the lab works on digital fabrication, augmentation of human perception, and operation using robots. The lab shares its research results through presentations at academic conferences, as well as live demonstrations at open labs and exhibitions.

Koichi Hirota, Professor
0 student voices
The Hirota Lab studies manipulation in VR environments, devices and algorithms for presenting haptic sensations, and communication of five-sense information. To make it possible to perform tasks in VR as in reality, the lab approaches the problem from the aspects of hand manipulation, haptics, object behavior, and bodily sensation. The lab is run jointly with the Nojima Lab. Research themes are decided through discussion, with emphasis on students' interests.

Haruka Matsukura, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Matsukura Lab, whose English name is the Olfactory Interface Lab, is a lab at the University of Electro-Communications. In May 2026, a faculty member received the Wolfgang Göpel Award at the international conference ISOEN, in recognition of contributions to the fields of olfaction and E-Nose.

Akihiro Kashihara, Professor
0 student voices
The Kashihara Lab takes on the question of how to support human learning from the perspectives of both the learning sciences and learning engineering. Learning engineering is a field that establishes methodologies and foundational technologies for making learning processes concrete and activating them. Holding that "building learning models is the essence of e-learning research," the lab develops learning support systems based on learning models. With the slogan of amplifying human intelligence, the lab uses advanced technologies as its core to research and develop software technologies for intelligence amplification.
