The Urban Stock Evaluation Lab studies traditional cities, villages, and architecture in regions such as Japan and Asia, from both historical and preservation-and-regeneration perspectives. Topics for bachelor's, master's, and doctoral theses are set independently by students according to their own interests. Students can take part in activities such as Research Units and the Edo Samurai Residence Area Study Group, and can receive guidance and advice from researchers at the University of Tsukuba and other universities. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Fujikawa Lab."

The Urban Culture Coexistence Planning Lab studies how to conserve and regenerate historic cities, mainly in the Middle East and North Africa. Historic cities show "layering" of urban space, in which spaces overlap as a result of having accepted many different cultures over time. Its theme is to consider what can be done for the city as it exists today, without falling back on token historic preservation or on modernization imposed above all else. The lab is made up mainly of students from the College of International Studies and the College of Policy and Planning Sciences, and fieldwork and study abroad are encouraged.

The Green Space Environment Lab studies how urban and rural spaces should be developed in an era of population decline. The lab approaches regions from the perspective of landscape, a comprehensive expression of the relationship between people and nature. Amid the urban shrinkage that accompanies population decline, the lab considers what comfortable urban and rural spaces with a low environmental load should look like. Its work centers on field surveys, combined with remote sensing analysis, simulation, environmental measurement, questionnaire surveys, and literature review.

The Architecture and Regional Planning Lab specializes in architectural planning and regional planning. Its research keywords include depopulated areas, rural areas, migration and settlement, kominka (old traditional houses), vacant houses, closed schools, and community organizations. Research titles include day care facilities for older adults in converted traditional wooden houses, support for migration and settlement by community organizations, and lodging facilities for rural migrants. Associate Professor Sachiko Yamamoto also serves outside the university in roles such as chair of the Ibaraki Kominka Utilization Council.

The Urban Informatics Lab specializes in architectural informatics, urban informatics, and design science, and studies architectural and urban space. Graduate students generally belong to the Degree Program in Policy and Planning Sciences, Graduate School of Science and Technology. Professor Shun Watanabe, who leads the lab, teaches courses such as Spatial Design Theory and Urban Planning Information Exercises in the College of Policy and Planning Sciences. The titles of graduation theses, graduation design projects, and master's theses are listed by year on the research supervision page.

The Transportation Systems Science Lab aims to contribute to a more sustainable and better society by building the theoretical foundations that help advance transportation systems and use them efficiently. A transportation system is a complex system in which human decision-making, the physical behavior of vehicles, and infrastructure such as networks are intertwined. Even when each individual acts optimally, collective phenomena such as congestion and crowding can arise at the level of the whole system. The lab analyzes the mechanisms behind them through both theory and empirical study. Applying theory in practice and developing traffic management strategies based on a deep understanding of these phenomena are also research themes.
