The Life Course Epidemiology Lab aims to generate evidence using epidemiological methods and contribute to solving public health problems. In addition to pharmacoepidemiology and clinical epidemiology using medical data such as claims (receipts), the lab works on the use of children's health checkup data and participates in the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS). The lab is open to a wide range of applicants: students and health care professionals who want to learn epidemiology and statistical analysis in practice, and working adults who want to study public health. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Yoshida Lab."

Associate Professor Atsushi Miyawaki, head of the Public Health Policy field in the Institute of Medicine at the University of Tsukuba, studies the social structures and systems that affect health and the quality of, and access to, health care. The behavior and preferences of health care actors are also subjects of his research. After initial clinical training as a physician, Associate Professor Miyawaki majored in health policy and applied statistics in graduate school. The lab conducts research using public statistics from Japan and the US, claims (receipt) data, electronic medical record data, and more.

The Digital Health Lab analyzes a wide range of digitized health information, aiming to solve problems in medicine and health care. The data it works with include electronic medical records, insurance claims (receipts), information from mobile apps and biosensors, images and audio, and genomic and omics data. In addition to conventional epidemiological and statistical methods, the lab uses AI analysis techniques such as machine learning. The lab welcomes students who have mastered the basics of epidemiology and biostatistics and want to take on the analysis of new types of medical big data, as well as the development and implementation of new tools.

The Biostatistics Lab conducts research to answer statistical problems that arise in medicine, biology, pharmacy, and health science research. Statistics is not just about data analysis; it is needed at every stage of research, from planning to reporting. The lab develops new statistical methods, studies how methods perform and when to use which, and conducts applied research that uses statistical methods in medical and biological studies. Faculty members of the lab also work as trial statisticians at the Tsukuba Clinical Research and Development Organization at the University of Tsukuba, where they are involved in trial design, statistical analysis, and statistical consulting.

The Systems Physiology Lab studies the neural mechanisms of adaptive behavior, that is, behaving appropriately as the environment changes. It aims to understand everything from sensory input to the generation of behavior as a single system. By studying Japanese macaques, whose brains are similar to those of humans, the lab also anticipates elucidating conditions in which adaptive behavior fails to function, such as psychiatric and neurological disorders. The lab investigates information-processing mechanisms by comparing behavioral tasks in humans and monkeys, recording monkey brain activity at millisecond resolution, and conducting experiments that selectively manipulate the activity of specific neural circuits.

The Life Systems Science Lab studies the essence of living systems using mathematical analysis techniques that combine artificial intelligence (AI) and systems biology. The lab views multicellular organisms such as humans as maintaining homeostasis through networks of cells, tissues, and organs, and regards the loss of this balance as the essence of disease. The lab uses mathematical models and deep learning to predict metabolism and to analyze data from a variety of diseases. The lab is new, having been established in January 2026.
