Maki Onishi, Professor
0 student voices
Maki Onishi Studio takes "architecture connected to the time of the land" as its theme and works to envision a utopia for our time through architecture. At Y-GSA, students belong not to a faculty member's lab but to a place of learning called a studio. Each semester, students choose a studio and, rather than inheriting the research of faculty members or senior students, select assignments according to their own interests and deepen their inquiry. Professor Maki Onishi's research covers architectural design and architectural theory, pursuing methods of architectural creation that include landscape and regional planning.

Ryue Nishizawa, Professor

Nishizawa Studio is a studio at the Yokohama Graduate School of Architecture (Y-GSA) at Yokohama National University that works on architectural design proposals under the theme "Toward Architecture for a New Era." At Y-GSA, students belong not to a professor's lab but to a studio, which is the place where they learn. In their assignments, students consider architecture that expresses the values of a new era, places and living environments suited to human beings, and connections to the history of the region. The studio is led by Professor Ryue Nishizawa, an architect.

Teppei Fujiwara, Associate Professor

Fujiwara Studio is an architecture and urban design studio that considers how industry shapes the form of cities and architecture. Industry is highly influential, and it shapes not only the form of cities but also the lives, culture, and mindset of the people who live in them. Through architecture, the studio considers what sustainable industry that respects people and regions could look like. It is one of the studios of the Yokohama Graduate School of Architecture (Y-GSA) at Yokohama National University, where students belong not to a lab but to a studio, which is the place where they learn.

The Y-GSC studio researches art and culture across fields including film, contemporary art, literature, dance, theater, popular culture, sound culture theory, and psychoanalysis. The concept page describes the role of the faculty as that of a midwife, who works together with students to give form to the "something" they bring and sends it out into society. In the Yokohama Urban Culture Course, students learn across practical studio subjects such as "Spatial Culture Design," "Critical Media Creation," "Sound Culture Studies," and "Video and Physical Expression," as well as theoretical subjects. The Architecture and Urban Culture Course (Urban Culture track) is also called the Y-GSC Thesis Course, and the Yokohama Urban Culture Course is also called the Y-GSC Portfolio Course.

The International Graduate Program in Civil Engineering (IGSI) trains people who can work in civil engineering to solve problems mainly in cities in emerging and developing countries. The course offers practical education with an emphasis on studio-based education. The course is not only for Japanese students; it is also established to educate international students, including master's students in the MEXT special program for government-sponsored international students. Lectures, studio-based education, and master's thesis supervision are basically all conducted in English.

Kenji Hasegawa

Prof. Hasegawa's lab specializes in modern and contemporary Japanese history and international Japanese studies. Prof. Hasegawa has studied the history of student movements in postwar Japan, the history of the massacres at the time of the Great Kanto Earthquake, and related topics. Before becoming a faculty member, Prof. Hasegawa carried out surveys and research in the United States and Japan. In supervising research, the professor makes a point of listening closely to students.

Assistant Professor Naoki Hiraiwa studies methods for designing spacecraft trajectories. The research keywords are stochastic control, astrodynamics, trajectory design, orbital mechanics, and aerospace engineering. Paper titles include travel in the space around the Earth and the Moon, designs for transferring between orbits in the shortest time with low thrust, and the design of orbits that wait for a comet. Assistant Professor Hiraiwa belongs to the Artificial Environment and Information Division of the Faculty of Environment and Information Sciences, and also holds concurrent positions in the Department of Artificial Environment of the Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences and in the Faculty of Engineering Science.
