The Environmental Safety Chemistry Lab conducts research on efficiently evaluating and reducing the environmental risks of chemical substances. Building on environmental chemistry and environmental engineering, the lab studies technologies for risk assessment and risk reduction. The lab also pursues interdisciplinary research that bridges the sciences and humanities, such as risk communication at contaminated soil sites. The lab welcomes students interested in efficient remediation and assessment of soil contamination, the diverse behavior of chemicals in the soil environment, and risk-based management methods around contaminated sites. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the names "Environmental Safety Science Lab" and "Kobayashi Lab."

The Urban Disaster Prevention Planning Lab aims for cities and regions where people can live safely and with peace of mind, and studies measures to reduce and avoid disaster risk. To put in place disaster prevention and mitigation measures suited to regional characteristics, it is necessary to understand the spatial relationship between the natural environment and human society. It is also essential to take a perspective that, while lifelines are cut off after a disaster, maintains necessary functions and works on recovery and reconstruction by making use of local resources. Associate Professor Keiko Inagaki, who is in charge of the lab, also works on urban spatial analysis using GIS.

The Urban and Regional Economics Lab considers the harmony and development of the economy, society, environment, and culture from the level of cities and regions. The era in which rapid economic growth enriched society is over, and it has become important to achieve economic development together with issues such as human rights, quality of life, and environmental sustainability in an integrated way. The lab aims to learn from leading examples in cities and regions around the world and to propose new development policies.

The Public Policy and Empirical Economics Lab studies public policy through an empirical approach based on economic data analysis. Economics asks how people and organizations make choices, and what outcomes those choices produce for society when added up. It also considers what incentives policies and institutions create for those choices. Using statistical data and social surveys, the lab examines phenomena and problems related to daily life and activities in cities and regions, and interprets the relationship between people's behavior and policy.

The Global-Local Management Lab studies the management issues that accompany globalization. Its main research question is how firms that were previously local build new competitive advantages when they change the regions where they operate and expand their business overseas. The lab also addresses the possibility that competition with foreign firms and accumulated experience in overseas business change a firm's basic way of thinking and behavior. Its keywords are business strategy, business organization, global management, and technology management.

The Complex Systems Meteorology Lab is the lab of Professor Ryuji Yoshida, whose fields of research are meteorology and climatology. The lab works to improve, using data from laboratory experiments, how the processes of cloud formation and dissipation are represented, since these play a major role in numerical typhoon simulation. It also studies how the concentration of hygroscopic aerosols affects typhoons and develops seeding methods to weaken typhoons. Professor Yoshida also holds a concurrent professorship at the Typhoon Science and Technology Research Center of the Institute of Advanced Sciences.

The Socio-Ecological Informatics Lab studies how ecosystems and society are formed and how they interact with each other. Without limiting itself to particular methods or study organisms, the lab collects diverse information and uses data analysis to examine how biodiversity and cultural diversity change over time and space. The lab also works on biodiversity monitoring using environmental DNA (DNA derived from organisms and floating in water), as well as surveys of the connections between giant trees and people and of people's values toward nature.

The Plankton Ecological Engineering Lab studies how plankton, seaweed, and corals live in the sea, and applies that knowledge to technologies for environmental restoration and fisheries. To understand marine organisms and their ecology, the lab conducts field observations and experiments. The lab also develops technologies that put plankton to use in the real world, aiming to contribute to building a sustainable, circular society. Centered on Sagami Bay, the lab studies seaweed beds, coral communities, and more.

The Risk Psychology Lab studies the psychological mechanisms by which people perceive risk. Around us are risks from the natural environment, such as earthquakes and volcanic eruptions, as well as risks involving humans, such as traffic accidents and crime. In global social issues such as climate change, the lab explores forms of communication that allow people with different values and positions to talk and cooperate better. Through such proposals, the lab aims to help overcome social divisions and solve problems.

The Environmental and Disaster Risk Education Lab conducts research aimed at reducing the climate change risks faced by local communities. Its main research focus is climate change education in higher education in the South Pacific. The lab investigates how climate change education affects the resilience of local communities.
