The Ecosystem Assessment Lab seeks to understand how human activities affect ecosystems, and studies management and conservation approaches that balance the use and conservation of ecosystems. Its research sites include dryland grasslands such as those in Mongolia, alpine wetlands and forests, and cities such as Yokohama and Tokyo. Using field manipulation experiments and analysis of long-term data, the lab examines how biodiversity and ecosystem stability change under climate change and human activities. By taking part in overseas field survey projects and international research networks, the lab can also carry out large-scale research.

The Aquatic Ecology Lab focuses on aquatic ecosystems such as lakes, oceans, and snow and ice, and aims to clarify the ecology of microbes and their functions in material cycles. Based on fieldwork, the lab investigates the world of aquatic microbes by combining microscopy, DNA analysis, chemical analysis, and culture experiments. Ecosystems are changing rapidly due to climate change and human impacts, and it is still difficult to predict what changes environmental change will bring in the future. The lab also studies the role of chytrids, fungi that parasitize algae and other organisms.

The Soil Biology Lab studies the diversity and ecology of organisms living in soil. Surveys are conducted in a variety of environments, including forests, coastlines, riverbeds, caves, and the gaps in urban concrete. The lab also investigates how the activities of soil organisms are connected to daily life and the environment, and how environmental pollution affects soil ecosystems. How to convey the fascination and importance of soil organisms to the next generation is also a subject of the lab's research.

The Plant Ecology Lab mainly deals with plant distribution, strategies, and evolution, and also studies societal initiatives. Japan is long from north to south, rich in topographic relief, and includes regions with extreme rainfall and heavy snowfall, giving it a diverse and beautiful natural environment. The lab explains that protecting the natural environment requires conserving ecosystems, which calls for both knowledge of the rules of the living world and people's efforts. The lab's keywords are trees, distribution, evolution, traits, and life history strategy, and the professor's researcher profile also lists UNESCO Biosphere Reserves.

The Plant Molecular Physiology Lab conducts research and education aimed at understanding and applying plants and algae at the genetic level. Using methods from plant physiology, molecular biology, biochemistry, genetic engineering, and genetics, the lab aims to elucidate the unique metabolic physiology of plants. A long-term goal is also to apply the findings to food and nutrition issues and environmental problems. The lab's website presents it under the name "Nakamura Lab."

The Paleoecology Lab uses fossils as clues to study how past global environmental changes affected the organisms of the time. Its main research material is fossils of ammonites, cephalopods that went extinct about 66 million years ago. The lab also investigates the ecology of the nautilus, a cephalopod that is still alive today, through surveys and experiments mainly in the seas of the Philippines. Studying both fossil and living organisms is one of the distinguishing features of this lab.

The Geology and Earth System Science Lab investigates the Earth's past through field geological surveys and physicochemical analysis of rocks and minerals. The Earth was born about 4.6 billion years ago and reached its present form through material differentiation and interactions among its systems over timescales of hundreds of millions of years. Unraveling the Earth's past leads to insight into the Earth of the present and the future.

Earth Dynamics Lab is led by Professor Masahiro Ishikawa, and its listed research fields include structural geology, high-pressure seismic wave velocity measurement, solid Earth dynamics, and tectonics. Geoenvironmental science is also listed as one of its research fields. Professor Ishikawa, who leads the lab, is a faculty member of the Department of Environmental Risk Symbiosis in the College of Urban Sciences, and is in charge of the Department of Natural Environment in the Graduate School of Environment and Information Sciences.

Biological Oceanography Lab studies marine life, focusing on plankton such as copepods. The university's faculty profile lists biological oceanography, planktology, benthic biology, and coastal marine environmental science as research fields. Among the recent papers that Professor Shimode lists as representative works are studies on copepod reproduction and bioluminescence, and on the silica skeletons of phaeodarians.

Law, Ecology & Energy Lab specializes in environmental law, environmental policy, administrative law, and public policy, and studies environmental problems from the standpoint of how society can actually put solutions into practice. The lab examines policies on climate change, energy, and biodiversity by comparing the efforts of national and local governments with systems in other countries. The department's lab introduction says the lab suits people who are interested in how society itself works, regardless of whether they come from the humanities or the sciences.
