The Physical Fluctuomatics Lab conducts research with the goal of making machine learning a technology that anyone can use. Machine learning is a technology in which computers read the relationships behind data, learn the underlying laws, and make predictions about the future. The lab works on research to understand the essence of deep learning, and on advancing computational techniques such as sparse modeling and quantum annealing. Through many projects and joint research with companies, the lab aims to return its research results to society.

The AI-Applied Communication Technology Lab (Kato Lab) studies information and communication networks, including satellite, wireless, and optical networks, with the next generation in mind. In an era when every device around us will have communication capabilities, the lab explores how to make full use of network capacity and enhance it further. Grounded in theory and centered on network and protocol design, the lab carries out research and development toward realizing optimal information and communication networks. The lab has no core hours, and accepts lab visits for third-year undergraduates and students transferring into the graduate school.

The Embodied Intelligence Robotics Lab studies new forms of communication between humans and robots, using the sense of touch as a starting point. From the perspective of "embodied intelligence," which focuses on the close connection among sensation, motion, and cognition, the lab works on haptic display devices, tactile sensors, remote technologies, and more. By sharing touch and bodily sensation, the lab aims to convey the feel of a place to remote locations and to share skills and sensations that words and video cannot fully convey. The lab is located not in the Graduate School of Information Sciences but in the Mechanical Intelligence Joint Building of the School of Engineering.

The Biological Information Systems Science Lab applies information science to "biological information," typified by genome sequence data, with the aim of understanding biological phenomena. Specifically, the lab works on genome sequence analysis, gene expression analysis, protein function analysis, and more. The lab also places importance on releasing its analysis results as databases that are easy for experimental researchers to use. The lab's website introduces it under the name "Kinoshita-Nishi Lab."

The Cognitive Informatics Lab (Matsumiya Lab) aims to understand human behavior from the principles of experimental psychology. People engage in a wide variety of behaviors in daily life, and multisensory processes such as vision and somatosensation are deeply involved in controlling them. These multisensory processes give rise to cognitive functions such as awareness of one's own body. Using psychophysical methods, the lab takes on the challenge of uncovering the cognitive functions inherent in human behavior.

The lab studies “data platforms” for collecting, analyzing, and managing the large volumes of data generated by research. A relatively young lab, it serves as the Data Platform Research Division of the Cyberscience Center at Tohoku University. The lab develops an environment for the long-term storage, management, and use of big data from inside and outside the university, so that researchers pursuing data-driven research can use it with confidence. At the graduate level, the lab takes part as a cooperating chair in the Graduate School of Information Sciences, and at the undergraduate level it accepts students from the Department of Electrical, Information and Physics Engineering in the School of Engineering.

The Information Networks Lab has information network systems and information security as its research keywords. The lab is the Information Networks chair in the Department of Applied Information Sciences, Graduate School of Information Sciences, Tohoku University. Its faculty are Professor Takuo Suganuma and Associate Professor Hideaki Goto. The faculty belong to the Network Research Division of the Research and Development Department at the Cyberscience Center. In Tohoku University's researcher directory, the faculty's research fields include information networks and computer systems.

The lab conducts fundamental research in fluid dynamics. Flows appear in a wide range of fields, from phenomena at the biological level to those at planetary and cosmic scales, and in engineering applications such as aerospace, the global environment, and next-generation energy industries. Using numerical simulation and theory, the lab works on discovering universal laws, elucidating common phenomena, and developing general-purpose methods. Its research is presented in three areas: computational fluid dynamics; elucidation of the statistical properties of turbulence and development of turbulence models; and vortex dynamics and flow stability analysis.

The Brain Function Integration Lab pioneers computing technologies that exploit the characteristics of living systems. The brain is a network of a vast number of connected neurons, and it processes information on principles entirely different from those of digital computers. The lab seeks to understand this biological information processing from an engineering perspective and to link it to next-generation brain-inspired information processing systems and to new health science and medical technologies. In its research, the lab uses artificial neuronal circuits as models of brain neural circuits, and it is also advancing implementation in "wetware" based on cultured neurons.

The Health Informatics Lab, part of the Department of Applied Information Sciences, studies lifestyle-related diseases, kidney disease, cardiovascular disease, chronic liver disease and liver cancer, and psychiatric disorders. The faculty belong to the Health Administration Center of the Institute for Excellence in Higher Education, and Professor Suzuki is also listed as faculty in Pathophysiological Informatics at the Graduate School of Medicine. Building on MA-5, a drug for mitochondrial disease, Professor Suzuki is developing treatments for kidney disease that make use of its action of increasing NAD+ and SIRT proteins. From a psychiatric perspective, Assistant Professor Kita is examining the medical information about transgender people that appears in the media.
