Masako Toriya, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Toriya Lab studies how technology changes people's lives, industries, and society. Using systems engineering and systems thinking, the lab describes these connections from a bird's-eye view. On that basis, it considers what services, products, and technologies should be created next, and how to go about creating them. Its main areas of focus are healthcare and science, technology, and innovation policy.

Eiichiro Kimura, Professor
1 student voices
Kimura Lab studies innovation management, the way companies create new businesses. It covers fields that touch people's daily lives, such as food and health, and the environment and sustainability. The lab explores how technologies such as digital health, alternative foods, and AI and big data can be turned into businesses. It also studies the frontline of open innovation, such as collaboration between large companies and startups, which accelerates discontinuous growth.

Kazutoshi Sasahara, Professor
1 student voices
Sasahara Lab analyzes large-scale data left behind by human behavior, using the methods of computational social science. Computational social science is a social science for the digital age, made possible by the use of big data and computers. The lab investigates the principles and technologies for maintaining the diversity and reliability of information on social media. It aims to connect the knowledge gained to value creation and social innovation.

Taro Sugihara, Associate Professor
1 student voices
Sugihara Lab studies the behavior and learning of individuals and organizations that use technology, and how these change. The lab conducts research by visiting sites in person and hearing firsthand accounts from people in the field. Findings are abstracted to identify relationships and regularities, which lead to proposed solutions. The faculty mainly study long-term care and healthcare, but students' topics are not limited to these.

Takuji Matsumoto, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Matsumoto Lab studies risk management and market design in energy markets. The lab builds forecasting models for time series data such as electricity demand, solar power generation, and electricity prices. Based on these forecasts, the lab designs financial products such as weather derivatives and explores ways to reduce the risk of price fluctuations. As distributed energy resources such as renewable energy and storage batteries become more widespread, the lab also works on how to design market mechanisms.

Seiichiro Honjo, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Honjo Lab studies the subjects of business administration, such as consumers, markets, and companies. It re-examines them from a perspective based on insights from complex systems science and cybernetics. The lab explores how the complexity found in living things and in society can be linked to value. Its main subjects are social innovation that creates markets, how digital technology, a prerequisite for it, is used, and brand building.

Masaharu Tsujimoto, Professor
0 student voices
The Tsujimoto Lab focuses on ecosystem strategy. Ecosystem strategy uses the view of natural ecosystems as a metaphor to understand social and economic systems from a broad, historical perspective. Built on ecosystem theory and platform theory, the lab's research uses methods such as integrative reviews, social statistical analysis, and qualitative data analysis. The lab does not stop at analysis. It aims to change real-world society by redesigning and implementing ecosystems.

Shintaro Sengoku, Professor
0 student voices
The Sengoku Lab studies management of technology, focusing on the biotechnology and healthcare industries. Based on observation in the field, the lab investigates how to run interdisciplinary and convergent research and industry-academia collaboration successfully. From this work, the lab develops and proposes standard approaches to innovation management. The lab aims for a form in which building theory and applying it in practice reinforce each other.
