Masaoki Uno, Associate Professor
Earth & Climate0 student voices
Uno Lab studies reactions between rocks and fluids that take place deep inside the Earth. The research ranges from reactions and fracturing in earthquake source zones to the mineral fixation of carbon dioxide and the development of supercritical geothermal resources, and the key to all of it is the reaction between rocks and fluids. The lab combines field geological surveys, chemical analysis, hydrothermal reaction experiments, numerical simulation, and statistics and machine learning. The aim is to gain a deep understanding of the dynamic changes inside the Earth, and to predict and make use of them.

Asuka Yamaguchi, Associate Professor

The Yamaguchi Lab studies deformation and material movement at subduction zones, where oceanic plates sink beneath other plates. Subduction zones are the largest shear zones on Earth, and they are also places where water and materials are transported on a massive scale. Deformation and material cycling there have a major influence on earthquakes and volcanic eruptions in the short term, and on the rise and decline of continents and on climate change in the long term. By combining deep-sea drilling, marine surveys, and onshore geological fieldwork, the lab seeks to approach these questions from both mechanical and chemical perspectives.

Kyoko Okino, Professor
Earth & Climate0 student voices
The Okino-Kuroda Lab, part of the Division of Marine Geoscience at the Atmosphere and Ocean Research Institute, studies the history the seafloor has gone through and past ocean environments. Prof. Okino uses seafloor topography, geomagnetic, and gravity data to investigate the history through which the seafloor came to take its present form. Prof. Kuroda analyzes seafloor sediments to study extreme environmental changes in Earth's history, such as periods when the ocean lost its oxygen and impacts of extraterrestrial bodies. The lab also takes part in research cruises aboard research vessels, carrying out seafloor observations and collecting sediments.
