Masaru Ogura, Professor
Chemistry & Catalysis1 student voices
The Ogura Lab studies the synthesis of porous materials, including zeolites, and ways of using them that take advantage of their characteristics. Its goal is materials that are truly usable and can help solve environmental, resource, and energy problems. The lab works on catalysts that clean automobile exhaust and on materials that adsorb and collect substances present at low concentrations. The lab is located in the Institute of Industrial Science, and it recruits and accepts graduate students.

The Urban Sustainability Lab studies the sustainability of cities, building on environmental engineering. Its research targets range from global problems to individual decision-making, and it always keeps people's daily lives in mind. Each student chooses one topic through discussion with the faculty, on subjects such as energy, food, infectious disease risk, and climate change adaptation.

The Environmental Quality Risk Management Lab studies the risks that arise when human activities degrade the quality of water, air, and soil. The lab investigates the forms in which hazardous substances from cities exist and how they affect living organisms (ecotoxicity). It also develops sewage treatment technologies that use the action of microorganisms. The lab values how members working on very different subjects come together as one group, gaining broad knowledge and perspective.

Kumiko Oguma, Professor
Civil Engineering, Architecture & Urban1 student voices
The Urban Water Systems Lab conducts field surveys of water environments, develops water treatment technologies, and studies how water supply should be designed. Water has value in both quality and quantity, and it is essential for healthy lives and sound social activity. The lab aims to maximize that value in a sustainable way. The lab works on elucidating the mechanisms of water pollution, developing new drinking water treatment technologies, and proposing appropriate water quality indicators.

Kiyoshi Takami, Associate Professor
Civil Engineering, Architecture & Urban1 student voices
The Urban Transportation Lab studies transportation in cities and its planning. It explores forms of cities and transportation that better support lives in which people live, work, and relax, with an emphasis on contributing to their realization. The lab develops survey and analysis methods for understanding human activities and behavior more deeply, and works on value-creating approaches to transportation and community planning. Its themes also include land use and transportation strategies and planning systems for sustainable cities, as well as the potential of new mobility.

The International Urban and Regional Planning Lab conducts comprehensive, empirical research on matters related to cities. The lab examines planning systems and planning issues by working with actual cases and data. Its research also covers urbanization in large cities in Asia and other developing countries, as well as environmental issues such as reducing energy consumption. The lab also considers what kinds of planning are needed when populations decline and cities shrink.

Hiroi U, Professor

The Urban Information and Safety Systems Lab conducts research on creating desirable cities and regions from the perspective of safety and security. Drawing on a wide range of available methods, including social surveys, mathematical approaches, consensus building, and information technology, the lab looks for hidden risks in cities. Based on a thorough understanding of human behavior, the lab proposes mechanisms for realizing desirable cities. The lab also collaborates with the Kato Lab at the Institute of Industrial Science.

The Housing and Urban Analysis Lab studies matters related to housing and living, and phenomena that occur in cities. Focusing on the housing market, residents' attitudes, and the spatial characteristics of cities and how they change over time, the lab reveals new causal relationships and predicts urban change. Based on these results, the lab evaluates urban and housing policy and makes policy recommendations. The lab is made up of faculty members from the Graduate School of Engineering, the Graduate School of Frontier Sciences, and the Interfaculty Initiative in Information Studies, and undergraduate thesis students from the Department of Urban Engineering are supervised by all of the faculty members.

The Urban Design Lab undertakes a wide range of work, from fundamental research on urban space to research on methods. The lab aims to serve as a design center that is open to society and local communities, supporting community development through the accumulation of information and research. The lab considers its task to be the study of "public space", meaning physical space that citizens can share and social space in which citizens can act freely, and the development of methods to realize it. Working with communities across Japan, the lab proposes desirable futures for towns in the form of plans and designs for space and systems.

Hiroyuki Ogawa, Professor
Space, Particle Physics & Aerospace1 student voices
The Ogawa-Odagiri Lab studies spacecraft thermal control technology and the thermal design of systems. The role of a thermal control system is to keep onboard equipment at appropriate temperatures in the harsh thermal environment of space. Faculty members and research and development staff of the lab have been responsible for the thermal design of many spacecraft, including the Mercury exploration mission BepiColombo and the X-ray spectroscopic imaging satellite XRISM. A distinctive feature of the lab is its "real-world setting," where members can work consistently from basic research and applied research to the thermal design of actual projects.
