Hideaki Murayama, Professor
0 student voices
The Outfitting Lab researches how to make structures lighter and smarter, building on composite materials and intelligent materials technologies. Outfitting (gisō) is the stage of building a ship in which the equipment needed for operation is installed. The lab aims to create lightweight, smart structures using fiber optic sensors and carbon fiber reinforced plastic (CFRP). The lab also conducts research and development on health monitoring, in which fiber optic sensors measure the shape and deformation of a structure to assess its structural integrity.

Hidetaka Houtani, Lecturer
Fluids & Heat0 student voices
The Houtani Lab studies marine engineering problems related to ocean waves. To enable the safe use of the ocean, the lab advances its research through theory, numerical simulation, and experiments in a large wave tank. In particular, it aims to understand complex phenomena such as how giant waves form and how ships move in them. Some research is carried out jointly with the Suzuki Lab in the same department.

Fujii Hideki, Associate Professor
Economics & Social Systems0 student voices
Fujii Lab studies social simulation to support consensus building in society. Its main targets are huge complex systems, such as transportation and cities, in which many elements interact with one another. The lab uses artificial intelligence techniques to model human behavior and develops large-scale simulation systems. The simulations are used to analyze real-world situations, solve problems, and design future systems.

Hasegawa Shuichi, Professor
Quantum & Condensed Matter0 student voices
The Hasegawa Lab studies how to create new functions by using the interaction between light and matter. Its foundation is quantum beam technology that includes light, such as laser cooling, photonuclear reactions, and X-rays. Its themes range widely, from quantum computers and isotope analysis to infrastructure diagnosis for bridges, production of medical radioisotopes, and laser processing. The lab designs and builds many of the instruments used in its experiments itself.

Fujio Toriumi, Professor
Economics & Social Systems0 student voices
The Toriumi Lab studies computational social science and the social application of artificial intelligence. Its subject is systems formed by large numbers of people, such as societies and groups, and its research rests on three pillars: mining, modeling, and design. Through the analysis and design of social media, the analysis of spatiotemporal data, and research on complex networks, the lab aims to realize better social systems.

Yu Chen, Professor
Imaging & Sensing0 student voices
The SCS Lab (Complex Systems Simulation Lab) studies "complex systems," in which many elements influence one another. The lab builds discrete models that simplify the elements making up a complex system into particles or agents, and simulates them on computers. It treats fluctuations in financial markets, self-assembly of colloids, and tumor initiation and growth as typical examples of complex systems.

Shigeru Tabeta, Professor
Environment & Sustainability0 student voices
The Ocean Environment Systems Lab conducts research on using the ocean sustainably. The lab carries out environmental impact assessments of ocean-use technologies for resources, energy, and food production. Its research also covers technologies and policies for conserving, restoring, and making use of marine and coastal ecosystems. The lab models ocean currents, ecosystems, and socioeconomic systems, and uses computers to predict future changes.

Takashi Shimada, Associate Professor
Data Science & Statistics0 student voices
The Shimada Lab studies "collective phenomena," which arise when many elements come together, based on statistical physics and nonlinear science. Its subjects are a wide range of systems spanning biology, society, and the economy, and have included ecosystems, granular matter, stock markets, and viewing trends on video-sharing sites. The lab conducts its research mainly with computational methods and statistical physics. Recently, it has also been working on evaluating player positioning in soccer and, in collaboration with researchers at the Okinawa Churashima Foundation, analyzing the breeding network of humpback whales.

Kazuki Shibanuma, Associate Professor
Structures & Mechanics0 student voices
The Shibanuma Lab studies fracture, the process by which materials and structures break. Fracture is closely tied to the safety of buildings and machines, and predicting and controlling it is essential both for designing new materials and structures and for reducing risks to human life. The lab combines theory, experiments, computation, and data science, aiming to establish new methods for explaining fracture phenomena. Fracture mechanics is a discipline that spans a wide range of engineering fields, including mechanical engineering, materials science, naval architecture and ocean engineering, aerospace engineering, and civil engineering.

Kazuyuki Sakaue, Associate Professor
Quantum & Condensed Matter0 student voices
The Sakaue Lab pursues research that combines light, represented by lasers, with quantum beams produced by accelerators, in order to open up new light and quantum beam sources. Light and quantum beams are used in a wide range of settings in society, including medical and infrastructure diagnostics and semiconductor manufacturing. The lab also works on making accelerators smaller and on applications to laser processing. It is a newly launched lab, and it is designing and building research equipment that uses lasers and accelerators from scratch.
