The Gerontological Nursing / Wound Care Management lab is pioneering a new academic field called "nursing science and engineering," which integrates nursing science with bioscience, engineering, and data science. The lab's goal is to realize a life of care and recovery in which patients are not made to endure suffering. In particular, it works to establish new care techniques for people receiving care who cannot communicate their own pain or distress. Established in 2004, the lab has been led by Professor Gojiro Nakagami since April 2022.

The Palliative Care Nursing lab conducts broad research on long-term nursing care for older adults and their families. Starting with the development of indicators, the lab considers how to measure and improve the quality of care in home settings and long-term care facilities. The lab treats the well-being of the nurses and care workers who provide care as inseparable from improving its quality. The lab also carries out case study research that examines individual cases one by one, building up new knowledge of care.

The lab studies how to protect and support mental health. The lab consists of two teams, Mental Health and Psychiatric Nursing. Although their perspectives differ, they share many of the same issues and methodologies. The Mental Health team applies a public health approach to preventing mental illness and promoting mental health in communities and workplaces. The Psychiatric Nursing team conducts research from a nursing perspective, so that people who need support can live in a way that is true to themselves.

The Maternal Nursing and Midwifery Lab studies the health of women and babies from pregnancy through childbirth and the postpartum period. Using biochemical and physiological methods as well as fieldwork in Japan and abroad, the lab clarifies what is happening in practice and develops methods of support. The lab has set up laboratory facilities that are unusual in nursing, and aims to provide care based on scientific evidence. The master's program in the graduate school has a midwifery education course that qualifies students to sit for the national midwife examination.

The Community Health Nursing Lab studies ways to improve the health and quality of life (QOL) of people living in the community and people receiving care at home. The lab supports not only individuals and families but also the whole community, treating it as a single unit. The lab works on building community care systems that allow older adults and people with disabilities to keep living in the communities they are familiar with, and on supporting the healthy development of children. In the master's program's Public Health Nurse Education Course, the lab trains public health nurses, who play a central role in building healthy communities.

The Fundamental Nursing Lab studies how to deliver the power of nursing to people more effectively and put it to use in society. In addition to the strengths of individual nursing professionals, the lab values the power of nursing as a team and collaboration with a wide range of other professionals. Building on nursing science, the lab's research draws on organizational theory, management theory, policy studies, psychology, education, and data science. At the undergraduate level, the lab teaches courses in fundamental nursing and nursing management.

The Waki DTx Lab studies digital health that uses information devices such as smartphones and wearables, together with apps. The lab develops apps for lifestyle-related diseases such as diabetes, confirms their effects through clinical trials and clinical studies, and works to turn them into tools that are used in society. Recently, the lab has been focusing on developing apps with stronger features that bring about behavior change and encourage improvements in lifestyle. By working with the Faculty of Medicine, hospitals, and local clinics, the lab aims to carry out research and development that meets the needs of clinical practice.

The lab studies the ethical and philosophical theories that form the foundation for healthcare policy decisions and for ethical judgments in clinical practice. In a field where medicine, philosophy, law, sociology, psychology, and religious studies overlap, the lab conducts empirical research in Japan and abroad alongside literature-based research. In 2019, the lab established the University of Tokyo Bioethics Collaborative Research Organization, through which it works with faculty members from departments across the university on bioethical issues in contemporary society. In its classes, the lab emphasizes not only understanding the issues but also acquiring ways of thinking ethically, and it puts strong effort into group discussions and exercises.

Hideki Hashimoto, Professor
