Susumu Yoshinaka, Professor
1 student voices
The Yoshinaka Lab studies the seismic design of curved structures and spatial structures, based on structural engineering for architecture. The lab studies methods of reducing earthquake-induced building vibration using vibration control technologies such as TMDs (tuned mass dampers). Targeting buildings with large open spaces, such as the Yamagata Gymnasium, the lab verifies vibration control effects through experiments and analysis.

Daiki Nakamizo, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Nakamizo Lab studies earthquake engineering and structural design of buildings. The lab specializes in “design input ground motion,” which expresses how much shaking an earthquake is expected to exert on a building. It also studies “performance-based design,” in which the performance required of a building is determined in advance, and dynamic interaction, in which the ground and a building affect each other.

Naoyuki Koshiishi, Professor
1 student voices
The Koshiishi Lab studies the materials and construction methods of buildings. The lab works on “traditional plastering techniques” for applying earthen walls, and on improving the durability of timber buildings. It also studies waterproofing materials and methods that keep rainwater out, as well as materials and methods for exterior walls and interiors.

Kosei Ishida, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Ishida Lab researches how to raise productivity at the construction sites where buildings are built. The lab works on ICT-based construction, which uses data such as 3D surveying to grasp conditions on site. It also analyzes the working time required for construction work and studies ways to improve work efficiency on site.

Bikash Lamsal, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Lamsal Lab researches the development of technologies actually used in the construction industry, from the perspectives of both architecture and information technology. The lab works on indoor self-localization where GPS signals do not reach, technology that assesses workers' health using only a smartphone camera, and the use of 3D printers at construction sites. By linking architecture and information science, the lab aims to advance construction DX, which solves problems at construction sites.

Jin Kusaka, Professor
1 student voices
The Kusaka Lab studies automotive engines and the powertrains of hybrid and electric vehicles. Tracing its roots to the Internal Combustion Engine Laboratory established in 1918, the lab continues hands-on research using actual engines and equipment. Developing engines and catalysts compatible with carbon-neutral fuels is one of the lab's central research themes.

Makoto Yoshida, Professor
1 student voices
The Yoshida Lab studies metal materials used in automobiles, aircraft, and power systems. By combining computer simulation with experiments, the lab predicts the defects and distortion that arise during casting and heat treatment. Its results are also applied to parts such as rocket engine components in national space development projects.

Shigeru Wesugi, Professor
1 student voices
Wesugi Lab studies the design of the “between” connecting people, tools, and the world. It focuses on the new bodily movements, sensations, and expanded experiences that arise from using tools. Its research targets familiar tools, such as devices that help improve athletic skills.

Yu Matsuda, Professor
1 student voices
The Matsuda Lab studies measurement techniques that use light-emitting molecules to make pressure, temperature, and flow visible. It develops methods such as pressure-sensitive paint, temperature-sensitive paint, and single-molecule tracking, making it possible to measure phenomena down to the nano and micro scale. The research has a wide range of applications, from pressure measurement in hard disk drives and household appliances to paper-based biochemical analysis.

Masayuki Goto, Professor
1 student voices
Goto Lab studies the application of mathematical information science, AI (artificial intelligence), and data science to problems in industrial and management engineering. The lab works on fundamental technologies such as information theory, machine learning, statistical models, and natural language processing. It also pursues applied research, such as marketing analysis, business analytics, and analysis of purchase history data. In particular, the lab studies management and information in the Internet age broadly, from fundamentals to applications.
