Tetsuya Yaguchi, Professor
2 student voices
The Yaguchi Lab studies urban design, focusing on the urban spaces that surround us in daily life. The lab reads the urban environment at many levels, from the architectural scale to the district and the wider metropolitan region. Students learn through hands-on activities, including development plans for overseas cities, design competitions, and joint research with local governments and companies. Through these activities, students aim to build the ability to make concrete proposals as urban designers.
Tomoyuki Tanaka, Professor
1 student voices
The Tanaka Lab is a project-based lab that renovates vacant houses and traditional farmhouses in local communities to create community hubs. Working with local governments, local residents, and companies, the lab takes on the design and renovation of real buildings and spaces. The lab also conducts research that investigates designers' works and compiles their methods.
Keigo Kobayashi, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Kobayashi Lab studies what roles architecture and cities can play in Japan, where the population is shrinking. Through diverse surveys and analyses, the lab explores the possibilities of new architecture and living spaces from both theoretical and practical perspectives. Targeting towns in Japan and abroad, the lab holds workshops and exhibitions in cooperation with local residents and other universities.
Taishi Watanabe, Associate Professor
1 student voices
The Watanabe Lab studies new forms of society and architecture that cross the boundaries of the architectural discipline. The lab practices design across fields and scales, including architecture, design, and urban infrastructure. It surveys the spatial structures of port cities around the world and of cities and settlements in Northern Europe and Asia, to clarify the mechanisms that give rise to architecture.
Haruhiko Goto, Professor
1 student voices
The Goto Lab studies urban and regional landscapes from the two perspectives of regional planning and urban design. It views a landscape as including not only its visible form but also the "seikatsukei" (landscape of everyday life) of the people who live there, and the social systems that support it. Centered on fieldwork, the lab develops methods such as the "Community Development Game of Life," which traces changes in daily life, and oral history. Through building systems of resident self-governance, it aims to create vibrant urban and regional landscapes.
Takashi Ariga, Professor
1 student voices
The Ariga Lab studies the design and planning of residential areas where people live, and the preservation and regeneration of local living environments. The lab approaches its research from two perspectives: urban design, which links architecture and the city, and community design for local areas. While taking part in community development projects in Japan and abroad, the lab investigates local history and residents' memories to clarify what makes a residential area distinctive to its place.
Shin-ichi Tanabe, Professor
1 student voices
The Tanabe Lab studies, through building environmental engineering, how to realize a decarbonized society that balances energy saving and comfort. The lab investigates how people's thermal comfort and indoor air quality affect their health and how easily they can work. Focusing on offices and homes, the lab also studies comfortable architectural spaces suited to people's ways of working and living.
Hiroto Takaguchi, Professor
1 student voices
The Takaguchi Lab studies how to improve building performance and decarbonize buildings, based on environmental engineering and urban environmental engineering. The lab works not only on newly built buildings but also on developing technologies to improve the performance of existing buildings. The lab promotes "Environmental Media Studies," which looks beyond the boundaries of disciplines to find ways to create new value in architecture and cities.
Yasuhiro Hayabe, Professor
1 student voices
The Hayabe Lab designs and studies building structures, focusing on seismic isolation structures. Professor Yasuhiro Hayabe worked on structural design at Taisei Corporation before becoming a professor at Waseda University. He has been involved in the structural design of buildings that use seismic isolation, including The Okura Tokyo and the Nippon Television Bancho Studio. He has also now opened Hayabe Structural Design Office, and works on building structures through both practice and research.
Susumu Yoshinaka, Professor
1 student voices
The Yoshinaka Lab studies the seismic design of curved structures and spatial structures, based on structural engineering for architecture. The lab studies methods of reducing earthquake-induced building vibration using vibration control technologies such as TMDs (tuned mass dampers). Targeting buildings with large open spaces, such as the Yamagata Gymnasium, the lab verifies vibration control effects through experiments and analysis.
