The Noda Lab specializes in Émile Zola, a French writer of the late 19th century. Its main object of analysis is the space depicted in novels. The lab has deepened its study of the urban landscapes of Paris in Les Rougon-Macquart, drawing on the novels' process of composition and on historical research. The Mitomo Lab's main research area is the economic analysis of information and communications. Alongside theoretical analysis of communication fees and externalities, the lab studies the impact that the development of information technology has on many aspects of society. The lab empirically studies how new information and communication technologies can be used to make things such as distance education and telemedicine possible.

The Wang Lab's main research field is the history of Christianity in China from the 16th century onward. Using methodologies such as history, intellectual history, bibliography, and comparative literature, the lab studies how doctrine was translated into Chinese and received as both scholarly and religious knowledge in China. From the perspective of global history, the lab also studies the intellectual exchange between Asia and Europe through missionaries as intermediaries. Recently, the lab has also taken up digital humanities, a field that combines the humanities and information science, and studies the structuring and use of text data that conforms to international standards.

Using village landscapes, human connections, and social conflicts such as disputes and litigation as clues, the lab examines the mechanisms and principles that maintained order within society, as well as the interaction between the state and society. Recently, the lab has focused mainly on the urban structure of Beijing in the 18th to 20th centuries, from the perspectives of technology, institutions, and the social economy.
