The Chemical Biology Lab develops “chemical probes” that visualize biomolecules and reactions in living systems. Chemical probes have a switch function that emits fluorescent or magnetic signals, and these signals make it possible to detect biomolecules and biological reactions. The lab is developing a fluorescent probe that detects in vivo the activity of osteoclasts, which are involved in osteoporosis, and a labeling method for studying GLUT4, a protein involved in type 2 diabetes. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name “Kikuchi Lab.”

The Soft Nano Materials Lab conducts research to elucidate and control the functions of organic materials at the molecular level. The lab designs and synthesizes organic molecules with electronic and optical functions, aiming for applications in molecular electronics. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name “Ie Lab.” For graduate education, the lab is a cooperating research group of the Department of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering.

The Advanced Inorganic Materials Chemistry Lab pursues research in solid-state chemistry, focusing on inorganic solids such as transition metal oxides. The lab creates epitaxial thin films and bulk samples with structures controlled at the atomic level, and works on developing their physical properties. The lab is developing materials such as two-dimensional ferroelectrics and hydrogen-absorbing oxides. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name “Kan Lab.”

The Molecular Correlation Chemistry Lab (the Kida Lab) combines organic synthesis with intermolecular interactions to develop high-performance materials that are useful for environmental protection and medicine. The lab studies materials and structures that take advantage of the molecule-encapsulating ability of cyclodextrins, which are cyclic sugars obtained from starch. For example, the lab is developing an adsorbent that removes polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), a harmful substance mixed into insulating oil, and is working toward its practical use.

The Molecular Catalytic Chemistry Lab focuses on the properties of molecules that act as catalysts and studies the development of new reactions that use them. By modifying and tuning the structures of metal complex catalysts and organic molecular catalysts, the lab aims to realize difficult reactions that have not been possible until now. The research is built on three pillars: asymmetric synthesis, which produces only one of a pair of molecules that are mirror images of each other; molecular transformations using positively charged cations; and direct transformation of carbon–hydrogen bonds. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Hirano Lab."

Hayato Tsurugi, Professor

Through fundamental research in organometallic chemistry and coordination chemistry, the Molecular Design Chemistry Lab explores new ways of breaking and forming bonds at metal centers. By discovering new reactions and applying them to catalytic reactions, the lab aims to open new directions in organic synthetic chemistry. The lab also investigates the properties of the metal complexes that serve as catalysts and the processes by which reactions proceed, and combines theoretical chemical calculations with experiments to establish guidelines for catalyst design. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Tsurugi Lab."

Mamoru Fujitsuka, Professor

The Excitation Materials Chemistry Lab (Fujitsuka Lab) studies chemistry that controls reactions, building on excited-state molecular chemistry induced by light and radiation under spatial and temporal control. Its themes include photocatalysis and chemical technologies that use light and radiation to investigate the mechanisms of life. The lab is a research division of the Institute of Scientific and Industrial Research (SANKEN) at The University of Osaka, and it accepts graduate students from the Department of Applied Chemistry, Graduate School of Engineering.

Shinya Furukawa, Professor

The Furukawa Lab (Solid Catalyst Chemistry Lab) designs and synthesizes new inorganic compounds, mainly alloys and ceramics, to develop materials for solid catalysts. The target reactions include the utilization of shale gas and CO2, hydrogen production, and nitrogen conversion. The lab also works to clarify, at the atomic level and using both experiments and theoretical calculations, why catalysts work well. The lab is a new lab established in May 2023, and it welcomes lab visits and consultations at any time.

Akinori Saeki, Professor

The Applied Physical Chemistry Lab studies new functional materials and evaluation methods, focusing on the physical chemistry behind functions such as optical, electrical, and dielectric properties. In particular, it carries out basic research and development on next-generation solar cells using time-resolved measurements with microwaves, a type of electromagnetic wave. Because evaluating a solar cell device alone often leaves much unexplained, the lab says that investigating the factors that govern performance and the basic physical properties starting from the elements of interest can provide design guidelines for high-efficiency devices. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Saeki Lab."
