The Avian Bioscience Lab uses chickens and quail to study how genes govern biological phenomena in birds. Using methods from cell engineering, developmental engineering, and molecular biology, the lab works on projects such as generating genetically modified avian model animals. The lab also studies how primordial germ cells, which will become sperm and eggs, differentiate and proliferate. Using mutant strains maintained by the Avian Bioscience Research Center, the lab also identifies the genes responsible for mutant traits and elucidates their functions.

The Aquatic Zoology Lab studies the nervous systems, sensory systems, motor systems, and behavior of fish and other aquatic animals. To understand how fish perceive their surroundings, the lab examines their sensory organs and the circuits in the brain that process sensory information. The Yamamoto-Hagio group studies neural circuits and motor control in fish, and the Abe group studies olfaction, vision, and the functions of neuropeptides. The lab traces its origins to the Department of Fisheries, established in 1951 at the same time as the School of Agricultural Sciences, and today continues as a lab of the Department of Animal Sciences.

The Resource Entomology Lab studies the structure and replication mechanisms of insect-specific viruses at the molecular and cellular levels. Using the gene functions of both viruses and insects, the lab seeks to clarify how the insect species and body tissues that viruses prefer are determined, and how insects evade viral attack. Through this research, the lab aims to contribute to the development of technologies for producing useful substances and controlling insect pests.

The Pest Control Lab focuses on the unique biological systems of insects and on their defense mechanisms against other species and foreign substances. Using physiological, biochemical, molecular biological, and morphological methods, the lab conducts basic research to clarify insect characteristics, including life history, physiology, and communication mechanisms. Based on the knowledge gained from basic research, the lab aims to find the weaknesses of pests and put them to use in pest control. Ultimately, the lab aims to contribute to building a symbiotic environmental system in which humans and other organisms, including insects, can coexist.
