The Wood Engineering Lab aims to improve environmental quality through environmental design using woody biomass, and to build a sound material-cycle society. The lab studies the mechanics and physical properties of wood as a cellular structure, the mechanical properties of wood, wood-based materials, and timber structures, and the development of recycling systems for woody biomass. Focusing mainly on traditionally built timber buildings such as old private houses and ancient temples, the lab has proposed a method for non-destructively estimating the bending strength of old timber from Young's modulus estimated using stress waves.

The Biological Systems Engineering Lab studies non-destructive measurement of wood-based materials, fruit, food, and plants using electromagnetic waves such as near-infrared and terahertz waves. The lab analyzes spectra obtained from complex samples using statistics, chemometrics, and machine learning to build models that extract the quality of interest without damaging the sample. In addition to developing measurement systems through hardware and software control, the lab also conducts basic research on how light scatters inside samples. The lab aims to use woody biomass and other organisms, which are circular resources, without waste.
