The lab studies how carbon and nitrogen move in environments centered on soil. Much of the carbon and nitrogen in soil exists as humic substances, which are dark-colored macromolecular substances. Soil is the largest carbon reservoir on land, and it is linked both to curbing global warming and to maintaining the soil fertility that produces food.

The Plant-Soil System Lab studies how plants, soil, and soil organisms influence one another in planted forests. It asks questions such as whether soil properties change plant traits, and whether plant traits change soil properties. Another aim of this research is to draw out what people should be careful about, and what they can devise, so that forests can be used sustainably. Study sites include inland forests as well as coastal forests, with tsunamis in mind.

The Forest Hydrology and Erosion Control Lab explores the dynamics of the water cycle in forests and other types of land, as well as local communities and their vulnerability to disasters. It aims to understand and clarify the actual relationship between people and nature, and to make proposals on how that relationship should be, from global to local perspectives. Focusing on mountainous upper watersheds, the lab studies how water and sediment move within watersheds, through field surveys and modeling using GIS and other tools. Every Tuesday, the lab holds a seminar, both in person and online, with progress reports on undergraduate, master's, and doctoral theses and presentations of papers. Drop-in participants are also welcome.

The Forest Ecology Lab studies forest trees for the conservation of forests and of biodiversity. Its research covers the structure, dynamics, and function of communities of trees, as well as the genetic diversity, reproductive ecology, ecophysiology, and biomass production of each tree species. Spanning the broad research areas of ecology, population genetics, and ecophysiology, the lab investigates at various levels, from genes to individuals, populations, and communities and ecosystems.

The Forest Protection Lab studies the ecology of animals, mainly insects, and of microbes living in green-space environments such as forests, satoyama, urban green spaces, and street trees. Through field surveys and a variety of experiments and analyses, the lab uncovers how organisms interact and live together symbiotically. Based on these findings, the lab proposes measures for protecting wildlife, conserving ecosystems, landscapes, and the environment, and controlling pests and diseases. The lab also aims to clarify how symbiotic relationships between insects and microbes are established and have evolved, and thereby to reveal the mechanisms by which biodiversity arises and is maintained.

The Forest Resource Management Lab aims at the sustainable use of forest resources, and conducts research on developing forest measurement technologies as well as on theory and planning for forest resource management. The lab analyzes data obtained from airborne laser surveying and drone images to estimate information on individual trees in forests. It is also developing methods that handle forest information from images and point cloud data using AI techniques such as machine learning and deep learning.

The Forest and Society Coexistence Lab studies, through fieldwork, the relationships between people and forests in Southeast and South Asia, Africa, and Japan. The lab aims to achieve climate change mitigation and tropical forest conservation together with improved livelihoods for local communities in the tropics. In Japan, it aims to revitalize life and forestry in mountain villages through timber production and the use of biomass.

The Forest Chemistry Lab uses chemistry to elucidate how plant biomass is formed and how it is structured, and to develop advanced ways of utilizing it. The lab conducts a wide range of research on cellulose, hemicellulose, and lignin, the main components of the cell wall, as well as their precursors. Besides investigating the formation processes and structure of woody biomass, the lab also works on establishing new measurement and evaluation methods and on joint research with other fields.

The Circular Resources Utilization Lab conducts basic research on the extractives contained in trees and wood. Even when extractives make up only a few percent of the content, they are a factor that determines the color, odor, and durability of wood. The lab believes that bringing out the full potential of the properties of trees and wood is the ultimate effective use of wood resources, and pursues basic research that can also be linked to practical use and contributions to society.

The Wood Physics Lab studies, from the perspective of physics, everything from the formation of tree cell walls and the growth of trees to the utilization of wood as a resource. Research begins with sampling in a variety of fields. Methods are wide-ranging, including tree observation, growth stress measurement, microscopy, physical property measurement, tissue structure analysis, genetic analysis, and simulation. The lab conducts joint research with various research institutions and companies in Japan and abroad.
