A lab that explores urban and town design shaped by landscape, through comparison with other countries and resident participation.

The Miyawaki Lab studies urban planning and urban design that make use of landscape. The lab compares landscape planning and urban planning in countries such as Italy, the United Kingdom, and Germany, and investigates the role and methods of landscape. It also works on sustainable cities and landscapes, including community development with resident participation, post-disaster reconstruction and revitalization, and harmony between renewable energy facilities and landscape.

An architectural planning lab that explores how the spatial form of cities and buildings affects people's activities.

The Li Lab focuses on the spatial form of cities and buildings and studies how it affects people's lives and activities. Using concrete examples of cities and buildings, the lab conducts field-based research to confirm the role of architecture in people's activities. Its research keywords include architectural planning and design, planning of libraries and campus facilities, and the reorganization of public facilities.

An energy management lab that aims to make buildings both comfortable and energy efficient.

The Tanaka Lab studies ways to save energy and reduce environmental impact in cities and buildings. It also aims to support people's quality of life and to improve health, comfort, and intellectual productivity. Centering on air-conditioning systems, the lab works on developing technologies that contribute to ZEB, simulation, and energy management methods that use AI.

The lab observes building vibrations to nurture earthquake-resilient communities and people.

The Tobita Lab studies earthquake engineering and community disaster prevention, centered on observing and monitoring building vibrations. Together with the Mori Lab and the Nagae Lab, it forms the Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Prevention Group, which trains students as a research division of architectural structural engineering. To reduce earthquake damage, the group works on three aspects: research (koto), systems and devices (mono), and raising disaster-prevention awareness and education (hito).

The lab reads how buildings shake in earthquakes from the relationship between the ground and structures.

The Mori Lab studies earthquake-resistant structures, earthquake engineering, and earthquake disaster prevention. Its specialties are building foundation structures and the dynamic interaction in which the ground and a building influence each other; the lab analyzes how buildings shake during earthquakes. Together with the Tobita Lab and the Nagae Lab, it forms the Earthquake Engineering and Disaster Prevention Group, which trains students as a research division of architectural structural engineering.

The lab studies the seismic performance of super high-rise buildings and construction methods that withstand earthquakes.

The Nagae Lab specializes in building structures and studies earthquake engineering to make buildings more resistant to earthquakes. For reinforced concrete and steel buildings, it investigates seismic performance using records of full-scale shake table tests and numerical analysis. Its main themes are evaluating the seismic performance of super high-rise buildings and developing retrofit measures, and developing easy-to-build, economical high-seismic-performance construction methods together with design methods for them.

The lab studies reinforced concrete buildings from both structural and materials perspectives.

The Concrete Engineering Lab studies construction materials and the structural safety of buildings made of reinforced concrete. A group that investigates structures and a group that investigates materials carry out research together. The lab places importance on students gaining a real, hands-on understanding of how structures fail, through experiments in which large test specimens are broken. Another feature of the lab is its emphasis on working together as a team.

The lab explores the structures and properties of molecules with π electrons and applies them to battery electrode materials.

The group studies the structures of organic molecules and metal complexes with extended π electrons, and the electrical and magnetic properties that arise from them. The lab synthesizes not only classical porphyrins but also isomers with different structures and contracted and expanded porphyrinoids, and investigates the properties of each individual molecule. The focus of recent research is developing these molecules as organic electrode materials for secondary batteries. The lab is part of Nagoya University's international program (G30) and recruits undergraduate and graduate students from overseas.

The lab studies disaster mitigation to prepare for flood and storm surge damage.

The Tashiro Lab specializes in river engineering and applied ecological engineering, and studies disaster mitigation measures against flood and sediment disasters as well as river and watershed environments. The lab belongs to an industry-academia joint research division on lifeline disaster prevention at the Disaster Mitigation Research Center. It works on flood analysis that takes into account buildings, roads, and even underground sewer facilities, and on crisis management planning to prepare for giant typhoons. Aiming for a safe and secure society that coexists with nature, the lab also works on building community-level disaster mitigation systems in cooperation with industry, government, and the public.
