Teruya Tanaka, Visiting Professor
0 student voices
The Tanaka-Nakano Lab studies the heating devices and reactor materials essential to realizing fusion power generation. The lab is located inside the National Institute for Fusion Science in Toki, Gifu Prefecture. One pillar is research on heating systems for creating and controlling high-temperature, high-density plasma. The other is the development of materials and equipment for the 'blanket', which converts the energy of neutrons produced by fusion into heat to generate electricity.

Tomoko Yoshida, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoshida Lab specializes in the chemistry of catalysts and photocatalysts. The lab researches and develops catalysts and photocatalysts to help solve problems of resources, the environment, and energy. It works on everything from preparing catalysts and testing reactions to analyzing their structures and mechanisms.

Sachiko Yoshihashi, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoshihashi Lab focuses on neutrons, one type of radiation, and conducts research to apply them in medicine and energy. To make effective use of radiation, which is often cast as the villain, the lab approaches the subject from many angles. Its research rests on three pillars: producing neutrons, measuring neutrons, and examining the effects of neutrons. The lab houses NUANS, an accelerator-based neutron source for BNCT, a cancer treatment.

Takahiko Sugiyama, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Sugiyama Lab studies the science and engineering of isotopes. Technologies for handling isotopes are essential for nuclear fusion, which is regarded as a future source of energy, and for the safe use and back-end management of nuclear power. Beyond energy, new uses of isotopes are emerging in fields such as medicine, analytical science, and astrophysics. As the word "Applied" in the lab's name suggests, the lab aims to carry out practical research that goes beyond academic study.

Hideki Tomita, Professor
0 student voices
Tomita Lab studies measurement in the energy field and environmental measurement. It also applies quantum sensing, which makes use of energy quanta, to areas such as medicine and drug discovery, nuclear physics, and public safety. In particular, the lab is developing measurement technologies that combine radiation and lasers, and applying them in the energy field. The lab began its activities as Tomita Lab in April 2024.

Akio Yamamoto, Professor
0 student voices
Yamamoto Lab focuses on reactor physics, the discipline concerned with controlling nuclear fission. Reactor physics is the field that underpins the most fundamental aspects of nuclear safety. Using data science, AI, and computational science, the lab pursues the world's highest level of safety for nuclear power generation in Japan and around the world. The lab also values collaboration with companies and other organizations so that its research results are put to practical use.

Junji Kato, Professor
0 student voices
The Kato-Nishiguchi Lab studies 'mathematical structural design,' which uses computational mechanics to find optimal structures. Its central theme is topology optimization, which makes structures lighter while tuning performance, such as stiffness, toughness, vibration, and heat transfer, exactly as desired. The lab collaborates with a wide range of fields, not only civil engineering and architecture but also automotive and mechanical engineering, aerospace, robotics, and materials science. It also studies methods for solving structural and fluid problems on computers such as the supercomputer Fugaku, as well as design methods premised on additive manufacturing (3D printing).

Hikaru Nakamura, Professor
0 student voices
The Nakamura-Miura Lab studies concrete structures such as bridges, tunnels, and dams, as well as their materials. Its work focuses mainly on the scale of cracks, combining mesoscale analysis developed in-house with nano- and micro-scale analysis and structural experiments. The lab works on new maintenance and management methods for structures that deteriorate over the years, and on elucidating the mechanisms of phenomena caused by the combined action of loads and the environment. It also conducts joint research with companies and researchers in Japan, and international joint research with researchers overseas.

Tomoaki Nakamura, Professor
0 student voices
The Nakamura (Tomoaki) Lab (Coastal Lab) conducts research to create and make use of safe and secure coastal areas. The lab approaches this from three directions: large-scale hydraulic model experiment facilities, its own numerical models, and field observation with the latest measuring instruments. Cameras are installed at Ida Coast of Shichiri-mihama in Mie Prefecture, where the lab continues to observe beach morphological change.

Masaki Nakano, Professor
0 student voices
The Nakano-Sakai Lab (Geomechanics, Soil Mechanics and Foundation Engineering Group) is a group in the Geotechnical Engineering Division that studies the mechanics of soil and ground. Through laboratory soil tests, the lab examines the strength of soil and how it deforms. The lab works on research to use soil and sand generated by disasters, such as tsunami deposits, as material for earth structures. Professor Nakano is one of the inventors of GEOASIA, a ground analysis technique developed by the geotechnical research group at Nagoya University.
