Integrated Analysis Division (Kanya Kusano) Lab
Machine-translated · View original
The lab analyzes everything from the Sun to the Earth as a single system.

AboutAbout the lab
Seeing the Sun and Earth as one connected whole.
To understand the solar-terrestrial environment comprehensively as a single system, the lab conducts research that combines the analysis of observational data with computer simulation.
In the solar-terrestrial environment system, which consists of the Sun, the solar corona, interplanetary space, the Earth's magnetosphere, the ionosphere, and the atmosphere, various complex phenomena occur, such as the periodic activity of sunspots, solar flares, magnetic storms, and auroral explosions.
By analyzing observational data from satellites and the ground, and through joint research with researchers in Japan and abroad, the lab works to clarify the whole picture of the solar-terrestrial environment system.
It is one of the core research divisions of the Institute for Space-Earth Environmental Research.
Key terms
- Magnetosphere
- The space around the Earth through which part of the solar wind's energy passes as the energy of charged particles and electromagnetic fields
- Ionosphere
- The space around the Earth where energy reaches the ionized layer, producing auroras and strong electric currents
- ERG
- A geospace exploration project. The lab is responsible for tasks such as releasing its data
ResearchResearch themes
The lab aims to gain a comprehensive understanding of the mechanisms of complex energy flow and conversion occurring across the vast space from the Sun to the Earth. It combines the analysis of observational data with model calculations and computer simulations.
*Illustrative imageThe Sun and Earth as a Single System
The lab treats the atmosphere, ionosphere, magnetosphere, and heliosphere as elements that strongly influence one another, and studies them within the system as a whole. It also cites comparison with other planets, whose conditions differ from those of Earth, as a useful research approach.
*Illustrative imageComprehensive Analysis of Observational Data
The lab collects data from near the solar surface to the atmosphere and analyzes how the regions influence one another. Through data processing including image analysis, model calculations, and computer simulations, it also aims to reproduce and predict energy flows.
*Illustrative imageMaintaining Data and the Analysis Environment for the Hinode Science Satellite
In cooperation with the National Astronomical Observatory of Japan and the JAXA Institute of Space and Astronautical Science, the lab maintains and manages all data from the Hinode science satellite and provides an analysis environment. It also independently creates and publishes a flare catalog and a 3D coronal magnetic field database.
*Illustrative imageReleasing Data from the ERG Geospace Exploration Project
The lab operates the science center of the ERG geospace exploration project as a space science collaboration hub, jointly run with the JAXA Institute of Space and Astronautical Science. It is responsible for publishing the data archive and developing tools.

Ratings and reviews reflect the experiences of individual current or former students, not the lab's official views. Whether a lab has reviews, or how many, says nothing about the lab itself.
Students who take part in an interview may receive a thank-you gift worth ¥1,000, regardless of what they say.
