The Neurology Lab was officially launched as an academic department after being approved as a clinical department of Nagoya University Hospital. The lab engages in clinical practice, research, and education, and provides care and conducts research in a wide range of fields, including neurodegenerative diseases and dementia. Research fields listed for faculty members include amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, spinal and bulbar muscular atrophy, Parkinson's disease, and Lewy body disease. The research groups introduced are the ALS group, the SBMA/SMA/nucleic acid group, the iPS group, the genome group, the peripheral nerve/neuroimmunology group, and the clinical trial group.

The Neurosurgery lab provides clinical care for diseases of the brain and spinal cord, including brain tumors, cerebrovascular disorders, and spinal cord diseases. The lab is organized into groups for brain tumors, pituitary and neuroendocrine disorders, functional neurosurgery and image analysis, spinal cord and spine, endovascular neurosurgery, stroke surgery, and pediatric neurosurgery. The lab is where the Sugita clip, an aneurysm clip for cerebral aneurysms, was developed, and its stroke surgery group carries out procedures such as vascular anastomosis for moyamoya disease.

The Clinical Research Education lab trains physicians and other researchers who conduct clinical research, and provides the education and support that underpin their work. Researchers from clinical departments are assigned to the lab for a set period, learn clinical research know-how through OJT, and aim to bring it back to their own departments. In addition to side-by-side support for researchers, the lab is in charge of seminars and develops educational content. The lab's website also serves to introduce General Medical Education, which is responsible for clinical education under the same program.

The Transfusion Service of Nagoya University Hospital manages and supplies blood products for transfusion and performs tests related to transfusion. In addition to responding to consultations on transfusion therapy and promoting the appropriate use of blood products, it collects and cryopreserves peripheral blood stem cells. It also supports clinical departments that provide cell therapy, including the storage, management, and supply of cells used in CAR-T cell therapy. A greeting message dated December 2022 (Reiwa 4) states that the service is focusing on measures against dilutional coagulopathy associated with massive transfusion.
Takeshi Yamamura, Associate Professor

In the Endoscopic Medicine Lab, Associate Professor Takeshi Yamamura studies how to detect inflammatory bowel disease through a blood draw, before the patient notices any symptoms. The lab is run by faculty of the Department of Endoscopy at Nagoya University Hospital. Associate Professor Takeshi Yamamura's field is the small intestine and large intestine of the digestive tract. The aim is to start treatment early and prevent irreversible changes such as narrowing of the intestine.

Mori Lab studies image-centered media processing, including image processing, computer vision, computer graphics, and virtual reality. A major feature of the lab is that it targets not only 2D images but also high-dimensional 3D and 4D images, and conducts research in which computers understand and make judgments about structures inside the human body. Methods developed in the lab are used in hospitals and elsewhere for diagnosing diseases, for treatment, and for endoscopic surgery. Undergraduate students can request Mori Lab in the lab assignment in the third year of the Department of Computer Science, School of Informatics. (Students in the Department of Electrical Engineering, Electronics, and Information Engineering in the School of Engineering cannot do their graduation research in Mori Lab.)

The Perinatal and Maternal-Child Medicine Lab works in the neonatal division of the Comprehensive Perinatal and Maternal-Child Medical Center, where it engages in clinical work and research in neonatal neurology in addition to caring for newborns. It also provides advanced care that requires extracorporeal membrane oxygenation and therapeutic hypothermia, and is equipped with cerebral function monitoring devices, MRI, and other equipment. In its research, the lab addresses perinatal brain injury and neurological impairment associated with fetal growth restriction, and examines the effects of stem cell–based treatments and drugs. It also studies how drugs used in the NICU affect the immature brain (the research descriptions and publication records cover work up to around 2016).

The Medical Quality and Patient Safety Lab, part of the Department of Patient Safety at the University Hospital, studies how to improve patient safety and the quality of care. Its work includes developing a scoring system that evaluates incident reports numerically. Through joint research, the lab is also involved in developing an education program to train patient safety managers and in measuring its effects.

The General Medical Education Lab is founded on thinking about, teaching, and guiding what a physician should be. The lab believes that growing as a physician requires not only improving technical skills but also growing as a person, and thinks together with its members about how to achieve this. In the professor's message, the expansion of medicine and the spread of the idea of applying findings from educational science to practice are cited as the background to the development of medical education. In its education, the lab goes beyond learning what good education is and how to teach, and deepens what each person values when teaching.
