Takashi Yoshimura, Professor
0 student voices
The Yoshimura Lab works to understand how the body clock is regulated in vertebrates and how they sense the seasons. Applying systems biology methods to animals that show clear phenotypes, such as quail and hamsters, the lab investigates the mysteries of the survival strategies that living organisms possess. Prof. Yoshimura's research has succeeded in identifying the “springtime hormone” through which animals sense spring, and in elucidating the pathway that transmits its signal. The lab is a group of the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM) at Nagoya University, where, together with synthetic organic chemists and computational scientists, it is responsible for developing molecules that contribute to better food and health.
Shigehiro Yamaguchi, Professor
0 student voices
The Yamaguchi Lab focuses on creating functional π-electron system molecules with unusual optical and electronic properties. In the fields of organic element chemistry and physical organic chemistry, Prof. Yamaguchi works both on designing molecules that take advantage of the characteristics of main-group elements and on developing new synthetic methods. A representative example of the molecules Prof. Yamaguchi has created is a compound that has been put to practical use in organic EL displays. At ITbM, Prof. Yamaguchi collaborates with other researchers, mainly on developing innovative bioimaging molecules.
Jeffrey W. Bode, Visiting Professor
0 student voices
The Bode Lab uses chemistry to make molecules that are difficult to handle with conventional synthetic methods, such as proteins and glycopeptides. To do so, the lab develops new chemical reactions and catalysts. The lab is a research group of the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM) at Nagoya University, and its principal investigator is a professor at ETH Zurich (the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich). Prof. Bode, the principal investigator, also works with Oi at ITbM on developing small-molecule catalysts that activate and transform biomolecules within living organisms.
Wolf Frommer, Professor
0 student voices
The Frommer Lab studies how proteins that transport substances in plant cells are positioned and how they function. The lab works on the mechanisms of cell polarity, in which proteins are asymmetrically localized at the cell surface, and on developing biosensors that measure sugars and plant hormones. Together with other groups at ITbM, the lab also investigates how membrane transporters, which carry substances across membranes, select the substances they transport.
Akiko Yagi, Principal Investigator, Professor
0 student voices
The Yagi Lab is a research group working in organic chemistry, including synthetic chemistry and structural organic chemistry. Its research highlights feature the synthesis of ring-shaped molecules such as carbon nanobelts and nanorings as key results. As a research group of the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM) at Nagoya University, the lab is introduced on the institute's website. Professor Akiko Yagi has been a Professor in the Division of Science, Graduate School of Science since 2025.
Azusa Kamikouchi, Professor
0 student voices
The Kamikouchi Lab uses fruit flies and mosquitoes to study the brain mechanisms that make communication with a mating partner possible. The lab investigates how the brain recognizes the courtship song, a sound signal emitted by a partner, and extracts its meaning. It also works on how instinctive behaviors, which differ from species to species, have diversified over the course of evolution. On the page of the Department of Biological Science, School of Science at Nagoya University, the lab is introduced under the name "Brain Circuit Structure Lab."
Toshinori Kinoshita, Professor
0 student voices
The Kinoshita Lab studies how plants respond to environmental changes and grow. Using the stomata in the plant epidermis as a model system for environmental responses, the lab aims to clarify the mechanisms of signal transduction. The lab investigates how stomata open and close in response to blue light, CO2, and drought stress, using physiological, biochemical, and genetic methods. The lab also belongs to the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM) and pursues research from a chemical biology perspective.
Takashi Ooi, Professor
0 student voices
The Ooi Lab rationally designs new molecules, creating molecules that function as catalysts to control chemical reactions and molecules whose functions are keys to understanding biological phenomena. By applying precise structural modifications to molecules, the lab creates catalyst functions that tightly control ionic and radical reactions. The lab aims for synthetic chemistry that contributes to ideal chemical production and to the understanding and control of biological systems. It is a research group of the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules, and is introduced as Organic Reaction Chemistry in the Department of Organic and Polymer Chemistry.
Florence Tama, Principal Investigator, Professor
0 student voices
The Tama Lab uses computers to study the structure and function of biological macromolecular assemblies. All life activities depend on the functions of biomolecules, and problems with those functions lead to disease. Understanding the process by which these functions emerge is considered important for developing drugs and other applications. The lab is a research group of the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM) at Nagoya University.
Yuichiro Tsuchiya, Project Professor
0 student voices
The Tsuchiya Lab studies parasitic plants, which grow by taking nutrients from other plants, to understand the diversity of plant capabilities and the mechanisms that drive their evolution. During parasitism, a parasitic plant senses signaling molecules released by its host plant and changes its form one stage after another. The lab investigates these mechanisms by manipulating and visualizing gene function with small-molecule probes. The lab also aims to develop new control methods for Striga, a parasitic plant that causes major damage to cereal crops in Africa, and thereby contribute to increased food production. The lab is a research group of the Institute of Transformative Bio-Molecules (ITbM).
