The Infection Response Project studies the mechanisms of innate immunity against viral and fungal infections. Cells in the body detect pathogens with infection-sensor molecules and quickly mount an immune response. The lab focuses on RLR (RIG-I-like receptor), a viral sensor it identified, and studies how it functions and how its signals are transmitted. The lab aims to obtain findings that could lead to new antiviral therapies in the future.

The Cytokine Project studies the roles cytokines play in the mechanisms by which infectious and inflammatory diseases arise. The body maintains a stable state (homeostasis) through the interaction of many cells and tissues. Many diseases arise not from a single organ but from abnormalities in multiple systems, such as the immune system, so understanding the cytokines that link them is important. The lab's ultimate goal is to find molecules that could become targets for new drugs.
