The Algorithms Lab studies algorithms in machine learning and data mining from both theoretical and applied perspectives. On the theory side, it covers online learning, in which the next action is decided while receiving the results of past actions, and active learning, which reaches an answer with few queries. On the applied side, it works on learning from information obtained on the Web, learners that run on limited hardware, and applications to biology and medicine. The lab aims to formulate real-world problems and build algorithms with performance guarantees.

The Mathematical Informatics Lab uses mathematics as a tool to study a variety of phenomena from an information perspective. It treats image and audio or acoustic signals as functions and analyzes them using Hilbert space theory and operator theory. It also studies fuzzy theory and many-valued logic, which bring the subjective vagueness that people have into information processing. There is also research that expresses biological phenomena with mathematical models and analyzes them, so the range of subjects is broad.

The Structured Intelligence Lab develops new AI technologies centered on deep learning, drawing on mathematics such as analytical mechanics and differential geometry. A distinctive feature of deep learning is that mathematical structure can be built in when the network is designed. Taking advantage of this property, the lab works on AI simulators that enable fast computer simulation, and on generative AI that creates images matching a given text. The lab holds research presentations, reading groups, and study sessions, and welcomes participation in its study sessions and projects.

The Intelligent Informatics Lab conducts research on human-computer interaction, artificial intelligence, and sensing. Aiming for technology that intelligently supports people and creates a safe society, the lab advances research on both the software and hardware sides. Currently, various projects are underway, including mobile technology, high-precision positioning and ranging, 3D imaging, and ubiquitous computing. The lab is open not only to students of information science and engineering but also to those interested in cognition, education, and design.

The Information Analysis Lab aims to build new fields by combining information science, applied mathematics, and physics. Using mathematical methods, the lab investigates learning methods for quantum computation, collective motion such as the flocking of living organisms, and chemical reaction networks. A weekly seminar is the core of the lab's activities, and third-year undergraduates begin with a reading group on statistics to build the foundation for moving on to research. Research topics may be decided in consultation with the faculty, or students may find and propose their own.

The High Performance Computing Lab studies high-performance computing (HPC). The lab researches parallel processing algorithms and programming techniques for making effective use of large-scale parallel computing environments such as supercomputers, as well as the latest processors such as GPUs. The lab also develops numerical computing libraries for matrix computations and numerical schemes for scientific and technical computing. The lab belongs to the Information Initiative Center and also manages and operates Hokkaido University's supercomputers.

The Information Systems Design Lab studies optimization algorithms that use evolutionary computation and deep learning, as well as cloud computing. It covers a wide range of themes, including security and large-scale distributed parallel processing. The Information Initiative Center builds and provides a large-scale distributed academic cloud for researchers across Japan, and the lab draws on that experience in its research.

The Advanced Networking Lab studies computer networks. It covers network design frameworks (architecture), QoS for maintaining communication quality, network security, and more. The lab is part of the Information Network Research Division at the Information Initiative Center, and accepts students from the Information Science and Engineering Course of the Graduate School of Information Science and Technology and the Department of Information Electronics in the Faculty of Engineering.

The Advanced Data Science Lab conducts research based on information science, computer network technology, and statistical science. Its research keywords are computational statistics, intensive data analysis, network applications, and data analysis and anomaly detection related to cybersecurity. Current projects include clustering of aggregated purchase data, functional data analysis of time-series data, and early detection of security events. Students join the lab from their third year, and in a weekly English-language lab seminar they build their English skills by reading books on statistics and network analysis.

The Integrated Architecture Lab studies integrated circuit technology for continuing to process information with high efficiency even after the end of Moore's Law. Taking the approach of designing software and hardware together, the lab works on cutting-edge architecture technology and system-oriented integrated circuit technology. Together with the Integrated Nanosystems Lab, it forms the Advanced LSI Engineering research group (LALSIE), promoting industry-academia and inter-university collaboration. Students interested in LSI design or system design are welcome.
