The lab works on elucidating the mechanisms of urological diseases and developing new treatments from both clinical and research perspectives. The lab provides broad care for diseases of the kidneys, urinary tract, male genital organs, and adrenal glands. The lab has four pillars: pediatric urology, voiding function, urologic oncology, and kidney transplantation and vascular surgery. In collaboration with the Faculty of Information Science and Technology, the lab is also conducting research that measures forceps movements during laparoscopic surgery training and puts the skills of experts into words.

The Cardiovascular Surgery Lab works on surgical treatment of diseases of the heart and aorta, and on the research that supports it. It provides a wide range of surgical care, from adult heart and aortic surgery to congenital heart disease in children, and ventricular assist devices and heart transplantation for severe heart failure. In research, the lab focuses on autophagy, the cell's internal degradation system, and investigates surgery for heart failure and methods of protecting the heart during surgery and transplantation. Basic research is led mainly by graduate students, who work on it during a period set aside for them to concentrate on research.

The lab is a surgical department that aims to restore both bodily function and appearance (aesthetic outcome) to be more normal and more beautiful. Plastic surgery is a specialty aimed at improving quality of life (QOL), and through reconstruction after cancer surgery and similar procedures, it can greatly change patients' lives. It is a lab with a long history: in 1978, it became the second plastic surgery department established at a national university in Japan. Believing that plastic surgery is also an academic discipline, the lab pursues research in both basic and clinical areas.
