A research division exploring the wisdom that allows people and nature to coexist over the long term in tropical regions.

The Center for Southeast Asian Studies is a hub for area studies that emphasizes fieldwork and integrates the humanities and social sciences with the natural sciences. The Environmental Coexistence research division takes an interdisciplinary approach spanning the natural sciences, medicine, and informatics to study a variety of problems affecting the geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere (the human sphere). The division also includes the fields of environmental ecology and human ecology (field medicine), which accept students through the School of Public Health in the Graduate School of Medicine.
