Environmental Coexistence Lab (Osamu Kozan)
Machine-translated · View original
A research division exploring the wisdom that allows people and nature to coexist over the long term in tropical regions.

AboutAbout the lab
For the long-term coexistence of people and nature
The Center for Southeast Asian Studies is a hub for area studies that emphasizes fieldwork and integrates the humanities and social sciences with the natural sciences.
The Environmental Coexistence research division takes an interdisciplinary approach spanning the natural sciences, medicine, and informatics to study a variety of problems affecting the geosphere, hydrosphere, biosphere, and anthroposphere (the human sphere).
The division also includes the fields of environmental ecology and human ecology (field medicine), which accept students through the School of Public Health in the Graduate School of Medicine.
Key terms
- Tropics
- Regions straddling the equator that are hot all year round (the tropics)
- Biodiversity
- The diversity of living things, along with the diversity of their genes and ecosystems (biodiversity)
- Hydrology
- The study of the circulation and distribution of water on Earth (hydrology)
ResearchResearch themes
The division aims to build knowledge and theory for the long-term sustainability of human society and for the coexistence of humans and nature.
*Illustrative imageEnvironmental problems in the tropics
Global warming, environmental degradation, biodiversity loss, and the overuse of natural resources are especially serious in tropical regions undergoing rapid economic growth and social change. The division tackles these problems from the natural sciences, including hydrology.
*Illustrative imageInfectious diseases in the tropics
Widespread infectious diseases are also a serious problem in the tropics. The division studies them through an interdisciplinary approach that includes medicine and informatics.
