Ayako Fukushima, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The cultural heritage studies lab researches how to preserve cultural heritage and how to evaluate its value. The lab also studies the history of Catholic church architecture in modern Japan and Asia. By reading historical records held by the Catholic Diocese of Fukuoka, the lab traces how church buildings came to be built. The lab teaches lectures on cultural heritage theory and exercise courses in cultural heritage studies at both the undergraduate and graduate levels.

Tomoko Imasaka, Lecturer
0 student voices
The lab of Lecturer Tomoko Imasaka studies the generation of ultrashort pulsed light and the development of mass spectrometry using lasers. Using femtosecond lasers as the ionization light source, the lab has published papers analyzing human breath, red yeast rice products, and biofuels. The lab also conducts research that uses quantum chemical calculations to theoretically predict the transition energies and ionization potentials of toxic substances such as dioxins and sarin.

Jun Tsuchiya, Lecturer
0 student voices
The lab of Lecturer Jun Tsuchiya studies the texture of materials used in architecture and the various ways people relate to the local materials that make up a landscape. One of its current research themes is the aging of wood, in which the surface changes color or cracks over the years. From the viewpoint of Kansei evaluation, the lab investigates the texture and color characteristics of architectural finishing materials and the effects of materials on human psychology.

Yoichi Kawamoto, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
Assistant Professor Yoichi Kawamoto studies the thermal environment and wind environment of cities. People living in cities spend most of their time inside buildings, and people and their surrounding environment influence each other. The lab works mainly from the viewpoint of the thermal environment, aiming for a sustainable society that achieves comfortable living environments while reducing the burden on the natural environment. The lab has published papers that use mesoscale meteorological model simulations and field observations to study sea breezes and the urban heat island in the Fukuoka metropolitan area.

Rei Shimazaki, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The Western Architectural History Lab (Rei Shimazaki) conducts surveys and research mainly on Gothic church architecture in France. Focusing on the triforium, a passage built inside the wall, the lab studies the history of the techniques used to build churches. The lab also works on the conservation and restoration of churches, and on research into architectural models and micro-architecture. In undergraduate classes, the lab is in charge of "History of Western Architecture" and "History of Modern Architecture."

Yoshitaka Sugimoto, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Yoshitaka Sugimoto's lab specializes in industrial design and studies design related to industry, including products, services, and brands. The scope of industrial design extends beyond products, UI/UX, services, and brands to business, management, and even the structure of society. Drawing on the professor's experience designing at a major home appliance manufacturer, the lab explores design thinking and methodologies for the next era. The lab carries out design research and hands-on projects with companies and local governments, covering products, services, brands, regional revitalization, and the revitalization of local industries. It aims for the social implementation of its research results and design proposals.

Ryoichi Tamura, Professor
0 student voices
The Design Systems Lab (Ryoichi Tamura) researches what desirable design looks like and how the design development process should work. Because a wide range of tangible and intangible factors are intricately involved in design, the lab organizes the relationships among the design object, producers, and users, and conducts surveys and analysis. Recently, with the aim of improving people's quality of life (QOL), the lab has mainly studied themes related to services, older adults, and energy.

Shigekazu Higuchi, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Professor Shigekazu Higuchi studies the genetic and physiological characteristics that humans have as living organisms. It is interested in how these characteristics are affected by differences in an individual's development and living environment. The lab believes that the characteristics it uncovers will lead to proposals for environments and lifestyles suited to people living in today's diverse society. The main research themes are "light, sleep, and biological rhythms" and "the brain and kansei (sensibility)."

Tomoaki Fuji, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Professor Tomoaki Fuji specializes in functional engineering and design engineering, and develops tools and systems for childcare support, elderly care facilities, and disaster situations. For an electric baby bed for childcare support, the lab investigates, in experiments with infants, what kind of rocking babies find comfortable and the soothing effect of rocking and sound in calming them. The lab also works on a system that automatically measures food intake in elderly care facilities and on a backpack-type carrier for disaster use. The professor teaches courses such as Functional Engineering Design and Spatial Expression Practicum I.

Takafumi Maeda, Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Professor Takafumi Maeda studies how physiological characteristics, among those humans have as living organisms, are affected by lifestyle and living environment. It is also interested in whether those effects can be regarded as adaptation to the environment, and it engages in both education and research. The lab aims to create environments and lifestyles that are truly "healthy" and "comfortable" for people living today.
