The lab conducts dental clinical practice and research with the goal of contributing to the maintenance of overall health through oral health. Its research covers the effects of oral care for perioperative patients, improving oral function to raise ADL in older adults, the causes of periodontal disease and periodontal bacteria, and regeneration of oral tissue. As the General Dentistry department of Kyushu University Hospital, the lab also handles a wide range of common dental treatments and oral management of inpatients before and after surgery. It also educates clinical trainee dentists right after graduation, and manages and runs the dentist clinical training program.

The Dental Education Lab provides problem-solving-based education at the Faculty of Dental Science, Kyushu University. The faculty aims to produce active learners who keep learning proactively throughout their lives, as well as dentists and researchers who work globally. The lab coordinates the first-year omnibus course and hospital observation training, conducts problem-based learning and team-based learning, and teaches specialized English in the third and fourth years. In its message to students, the lab states that students are expected to have not only knowledge but also the ability to integrate information to solve problems, as well as communication skills.

The lab is an endowed chair that objectively evaluates current dental treatment based on the latest findings from basic and clinical research. The lab holds that, for the most advanced medical materials used in dental practice, it is essential to understand their safety and effectiveness in connection with basic knowledge. The lab has also begun developing new medical technologies that are needed in clinical settings. The lab was established with the cooperation of GC Corporation and aims to serve as a bridge between the university and industry.

The Dental Development and Regeneration (DDR) Research Center is a research center established within the Faculty of Dental Science. It brings together researchers working on dental development and regeneration, with the aim of realizing new regenerative medicine using oral bioresources. It was established in April 2021 to put into concrete form the “regenerative and reconstructive medicine of oral tissues” that the Faculty of Dental Science has been promoting. A distinctive feature is that young and mid-career researchers are taken out of their existing departmental boundaries and placed as PIs, creating an environment where they collaborate, produce results, and become independent. The website at the time of establishment states that the center would have divisions for developmental research, stem cell research, control of cell differentiation, biomaterials, biocompatibility, and clinical application.
