The Virtual Reality and Interaction Design Lab's research fields include human interfaces, learning support systems, and Kansei informatics. Its research themes include language learning support systems, haptic interfaces, behavior change, intelligence augmentation, affective interfaces, and augmented reality. The lab is run jointly with the Arakawa Lab and the Mine Lab.

The Circular Integrated Photonics Lab studies how to realize "Table-top Fabrication," in which anyone can print photonic devices with a desktop printer. Until now, optical chips have been made in huge factories using enormous amounts of electricity. The lab uses organic materials to make small devices that handle light, through inkjet-based self-assembly and nanoscratching. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Yoshioka Lab."

The Sensory Information Processing Lab studies, from theoretical and computational perspectives, how the sensory systems process information. Its research rests on two pillars: diagnosing hearing and vision problems using algorithms, machine learning, and AI, and the theory and models of the information carried by neurons. On its homepage, the lab presents as "known results" an inequality that holds for the responses of sensory neurons and a Bayesian method for determining multiple thresholds simultaneously. Assistant Professor Haruna Fujihira studies hidden hearing loss and auditory training, among other topics, through physiological measurements of hearing.

The Intelligent Modeling Lab studies how to understand natural and social phenomena through mathematical models and simulation. The real world is complex, but the lab believes that extracting the key mechanisms and modeling them makes it easier to grasp the essence of a phenomenon. The lab also works on using AI to make the research process more sophisticated, and is interested in mechanisms for collaboration between large language models (LLMs) and researchers. The lab's website introduces it under the name Artificial Intelligence and Modeling Laboratory (AIML).

The Human Data Interaction Lab studies how to deliver information in situations where people and data meet. The lab explains the relationship between this field and data science by comparing it to the relationship between human-computer interaction and computer science. The lab conducts research on learning and discussion settings, such as university course recommendation, language learning, programming education, and discussions in VR.

The Human Information Science Lab studies the measurement and analysis of biological data, such as faint electrical signals from the heart and muscles, brain waves, respiration, and body and eye movements. Biological data can reveal changes in mental and physical states that people themselves do not notice, as well as abnormalities such as disease. Beyond simply measuring data, the lab places importance on clarifying its features and structure and discovering how it can be used. The lab aims to apply the knowledge and technology it obtains to a wide range of fields, such as culture and the arts, society and welfare, medicine and health, sports, and education.

The Behavioral Informatics Lab aims to understand how intellectual activities, such as the learning that people do in the real world, come about. Centered on ubiquitous multimodal sensing technology, the lab aims to develop and put into practice data science techniques that comprehensively measure information related to people's bodies, environments, and intelligence in order to understand behavior and knowledge. The research is pursued from interdisciplinary perspectives that include not only engineering but also cognitive psychology, the learning sciences, and social survey methods. On the lab's website, the lab is introduced under the name "Masaya Okada Lab."

The Ashir Lab (SocialTech Lab) researches digital health technologies for regions with limited access to medical care. The lab develops the core technology of the Portable Health Clinic, a clinic system that can be carried and set up on site, and is running pilot operations in countries in Asia and Africa. Its work includes digitizing paper-based and handwritten medical records, visualizing medical data, and making individualized triage decisions using explainable AI. The lab also researches extracting medical information from audio recordings of conversations between doctors and patients.

The Atomic Layer Process Science Lab studies thin-film and surface reactions, and the mechanisms by which devices degrade, in semiconductor transistors that have shrunk to a few nanometers. According to the lab's website, a smartphone contains as many as 20 billion transistors with a design scale of a few nanometers. Aiming at the electronics of a future in which miniaturization and high integration advance further and fuse with quantum computers, the lab works on the science of thin-film and surface reactions at the atomic-layer scale. On the lab's website, it is presented under the name "Kondo Lab."

The Materials Electrochemistry Lab (Nakano-Taninouchi Lab) studies process technologies such as plating, non-ferrous metal smelting, and urban mining recycling, based on an understanding of electrochemical phenomena. Grounded in the fundamentals of electrochemistry, the lab works on wet plating of functional thin films, electrowinning of zinc, copper, and nickel, and wet processing of sulfide minerals. The lab aims to thoroughly understand the key reaction phenomena and to create highly efficient, environmentally friendly technologies.
