The Disaster Prevention Geotechnical Engineering Lab studies preparedness for natural disasters such as earthquakes, floods, and landslides from a geotechnical engineering perspective. It also focuses on climate change caused by global warming and the disasters that accompany it, and conducts research to develop climate change adaptation measures based on geotechnical engineering. One of the lab's major goals is to create a research methodology that combines disaster prevention and nature conservation. In addition to field surveys, testing, and model experiments with their simulations, the lab works on improving disaster prevention systems using drones, IoT, and artificial intelligence (AI).

The Disaster Mathematics Lab studies how to predict the damage caused by natural disasters such as tsunamis and landslides before they happen. Using mathematical science, the lab seeks to understand the principles of nature (water, soil, and wind) and to quantify the uncertainty inherent in disasters. The lab works on disaster simulation using the particle method, a numerical analysis technique, together with machine learning and high-performance computing on supercomputers and GPUs. The lab also studies VR, which lets people experience damage in a virtual space beforehand, and photogrammetry, which creates 3D models from photographs.

The Land Policy and Disaster Prevention Lab studies how to build a safe national land and how cities and regions should be shaped in Japan, which faces population decline and growing disasters caused by climate change. To prepare for disasters that disaster prevention facilities alone cannot handle, the lab studies disaster prevention through social systems, including ways of living, land-use management, and local communities. Infrastructure management and international cooperation on urban problems in Asia are also research themes. Associate Professor Tatsuro Sato studies regional development that uses water as its axis, covering disaster prevention, the water environment, and renewable energy.

The Coastal and Ocean Engineering Lab studies how to understand, predict, and take countermeasures against coastal disasters such as typhoons, high waves, and storm surges. Focusing mainly on the Kyushu coast, the lab combines field observation, hydraulic model experiments, numerical simulation, and AI to capture phenomena and risks such as wave overtopping, storm surges, and high waves. The lab aims to turn the knowledge it obtains into technologies that benefit coastal communities, such as disaster prevention facilities and prediction systems.

The Watershed Systems Engineering Lab conducts research and education on systems in which nature and human activity merge, with water as the medium. Its foundation is engineering, but it aims to be a new field that merges the boundaries of a wide range of disciplines, including the humanities, natural sciences, agriculture, and ecology. Its work ranges from research on applied ecological engineering and sediment hydraulics to research on consensus building, landscape, and flood damage. The lab also works with citizens and government agencies to put actual river restoration and community building into practice. Research is carried out through field surveys and observations, physical model experiments, interviews and questionnaires, and workshops.

The Resource Circulation and Waste Engineering Lab researches technology development for promoting resource circulation and the proper treatment of waste, with the aim of moving toward a sustainable society. The lab also studies how to evaluate the rationality of these technologies, and works on both the hardware and software sides. It also conducts research that clarifies the interrelationships among the global environment, human activity, and social systems, with the aim of forecasting future environmental problems and proposing designs for social systems. The same site also introduces another division, the Resource Circulation IoT Systems Division.

The Aquatic Environmental Engineering Lab researches the groundwater environment and water-related problems such as heavy rain and drought. Its topics include groundwater quality and salinization, diagnosis of heavy rain using artificial intelligence, artificial rainfall using liquid carbon dioxide, and investigations of past debris flow disasters based on old documents. Its groundwater research is mainly conducted in the western part of Fukuoka City.

The Ecological Engineering Lab researches ecological engineering, centered on fieldwork, in coastal, river, and nearshore environments. Its scope is broad, ranging from the conservation and restoration of habitats for organisms on tidal flats and sandy beaches, to water resource management, laws and institutions for environmental planning and assessment, and regional planning for fishing villages. Its joint research is carried out not only with researchers at universities and research institutions, but also with a diverse range of partners, including local residents, NPOs, NGOs, and private-sector engineers. The lab's goal is a society in which people live in coexistence with the natural environment and ecosystems.
