Masao Ohno, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Masao Ohno, a geophysicist, studies the Earth using keywords such as the geomagnetic field, paleoenvironments, and archaeomagnetism. The lab examines rocks, sediments, and the kiln remains and pottery of human archaeological sites using paleomagnetism, and explores past variations in the geomagnetic field and their mechanisms. From the analysis of seabed sediments, the lab studies changes in paleoclimate and paleoenvironments, and from the analysis of underground water and gas, it studies earthquake and volcanic activity. In earth science research, the lab works with many researchers and staff on observation, sample collection, and analysis.

Nobuhiko Nakano, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Nobuhiko Nakano specializes in geology, which uses fieldwork and laboratory experiments to understand how various geological formations in Japan and around the world formed. Focusing on Vietnam, Laos, Myanmar, and Thailand in Southeast Asia, the lab investigates how the Asian continent formed, and the phenomena that occur from the lower crust to the upper mantle in zones where continents collide. The lab also works on crustal evolution as seen from East Antarctica, and on reassessing the geological belts of Japan through age and isotope analysis. In the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Associate Professor Nakano teaches Earth science practical courses and lectures.

Ryoko Senda, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Ryoko Senda's lab uses geochemistry to investigate the internal structure, chemical composition, and evolution of the Earth. By analyzing samples such as rocks with high precision, the lab has used platinum-group elements and osmium isotope ratios to explore the movement of material within the mantle and the history and origin of volcanic rocks. Using the same methods, the lab has also begun research on human history, working with archaeology researchers to analyze archaeological materials. As a faculty member of the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Associate Professor Senda teaches courses including Earth science and Earth environment practicals.

Kazunori Matsuo, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Kazunori Matsuo's lab studies parasitoid wasps, which parasitize other insects, comprehensively, from taxonomic research to applied use. A parasitoid wasp is a wasp whose mother lays eggs on a host insect, and whose hatched larvae grow by eating the host. Although they are small, at around 1 mm in body length, they are said to account for about 20% of all insect species, and are regarded as an important taxonomic group for studying biodiversity. Associate Professor Matsuo focuses on pest damage to crops and livestock, visits production sites in Japan and abroad, and explores ways to achieve stable food production, centered on developing pest control methods.

Shinichiro Kida, Associate Professor
0 student voices
Associate Professor Shinichiro Kida specializes in physical oceanography and climate dynamics, studying ocean circulation in marginal seas and the open ocean. The lab works on strait exchange and deep gravity currents, focusing on the Sea of Okhotsk, the Sea of Japan, and the Indonesian Archipelago seas. It also studies the dynamical processes between rivers and the ocean, and develops coupled ocean-river models. In the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Associate Professor Kida teaches "Atmospheric and Ocean Science" as part of Research Projects (Earth and Environment field).

Tatsuro Adachi, Assistant Professor
0 student voices
The lab of Assistant Professor Tatsuro Adachi studies geology, aiming to clarify how the Earth has changed over time from the records left in strata and rocks. Its main research target is the geology of the Antarctic continent, where it investigates how continents formed and grew, and the changes that occur where continents collide. The lab also quantitatively analyzes archaeological materials using X-ray analyzers, mass spectrometers, and other instruments, to clarify their characteristics as materials. The faculty introduction page describes geology as a field that ranges from fieldwork to analysis based on physics, chemistry, and biology, where many different types of people can thrive.

Yoichiro Miki, Professor
0 student voices
Professor Yoichiro Miki studies the development of teaching strategies that nurture active learners, and the educational practice based on them. The lab also develops ICT-based learning support systems and content, as well as reliable methods for assessing outcomes. Professor Miki explains that in the "Collaborative Courses" taken in the second and third years of the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, students learn through team-based learning: small groups identify problems themselves, and each member acquires the necessary knowledge individually and then shares it with the others. Kyushu University's researcher information page lists the professor as affiliated with the Center for Co-Creation Education Promotion, with a concurrent appointment in the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Department of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation.

Jan Brezina, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The Partial Differential Equations (Jan Brezina) Lab is the lab of Associate Professor Jan Brezina, who specializes in partial differential equations. In the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation, Associate Professor Brezina teaches the foundation course "Mathematics for Co-creation" and a course on Python programming. In a message to high school students, the professor says that even for those who do not major in mathematics, the effort to understand its basic ideas will pay off. Associate Professor Brezina belongs to the Division of Natural Science Theory in the Faculty of Arts and Science, and holds concurrent appointments in the Department of Mathematics in the Graduate School of Mathematics and the Department of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation in the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation.

Satoshi Watanabe, Associate Professor
0 student voices
From the standpoint of hydrology, Associate Professor Satoshi Watanabe studies how the water cycle relates to human society and biodiversity. The professor is interested in clarifying how changes such as climate change and population decline affect the water cycle, human society, and biodiversity. Because issues related to the water cycle span both the natural sciences and the humanities and social sciences, the lab takes an interdisciplinary approach to solving them. The School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation's web page introduces water issues as a field that calls for "co-creation," which connects multiple areas of expertise.

Gde Pandhe Wisnu Suyantara, Associate Professor
0 student voices
The lab develops environmentally friendly, resource-efficient technologies for processing complex copper ores that contain arsenic. Its main research is on separating arsenic-bearing copper minerals from primary copper sulfide ores by flotation, and it also puts effort into developing environmentally friendly flotation reagents. The lab also conducts research that pays attention to water resources and environmental impact, such as flotation using seawater or recycled water and the reuse of flotation tailings. Associate Professor Gde Pandhe Wisnu Suyantara belongs to the Department of Earth Resources Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, and holds a concurrent appointment in the Department of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation in the School of Interdisciplinary Science and Innovation.
