Fumito Tani, Associate Professor

The Multidimensional Molecular Arrangement Lab studies the structures and properties of molecules and molecular assemblies, based on the chemistry of organic π-electron compounds. It synthesizes organic π-electron compounds that are of structural, theoretical, and physical interest, extends this work to supramolecules and metal complexes, and aims to clarify the relationship between structure and properties/functions. The lab works on azulene-based molecules, porphyrin-fullerene composites, and droplets with multiple-compartment structures, among other topics. On the lab's website, it is introduced under the name "Tani-Goto Lab."

Satoru Kidoaki, Professor

The Medical Biophysical Chemistry Lab (Kidoaki Lab) studies the engineering of materials that manipulate cells, and the biophysics of cells, in order to broaden the foundations of regenerative medical engineering. It aims to create biomaterials that control how cells and tissues respond to their mechanical environment (mechanobiology). Within the lab there is also the Ise Group, which uses glycopolymers to control cell functions.

The Complex Molecular Systems Lab conducts research based on polymer chemistry, aiming to create high-performance, highly functional soft matter with controlled nanostructures. The lab studies a wide variety of polymer materials, including crystalline polymers, amorphous polymers, elastomers, and composite systems with fillers. It also studies the structure and properties of network polymers, as well as the adhesion mechanisms and failure behavior of polymer adhesives. The lab's own website presents it under the name "Complex Molecular Systems Lab".

Miho Yamauchi, Professor

The Inorganic Materials Chemistry Lab (Yamauchi Lab) researches the creation of new functional substances and materials by making use of the characteristics of various elements. To build energy-saving, resource-saving, sustainable chemical processes, the lab is developing nanoscale materials. The properties it focuses on are catalysis that converts energy and substances, hydrogen storage, and the diffusion of ions and atoms.

Masato Ito, Associate Professor

This research group applies the changes in water molecule activity and the unusual ion conduction that arise from molecular crowding effects inside cells to the development of energy devices. In secondary batteries in particular, it focuses on rate capability, durability, and safety, which have tended to be put aside until now. From a biomimetic perspective, it reconsiders material selection, molecular assembly, and interface control, and works to bring fundamental solutions. The group believes that improving energy storage technology is necessary to make renewable energy a main power source, and that developing next-generation secondary batteries will become increasingly important.

The lab of Associate Professor Masato Ito applies the changes in water activity and the unusual ion conduction phenomena that arise from molecular crowding effects inside cells to the development of energy devices. In particular, for secondary batteries, it aims to solve rate capability, durability, and safety, which have tended to be put aside until now, from the perspective of biomimetics (an approach that takes living systems as a model). Its method is to rethink material selection, molecular assembly, and interface control.
