AboutAbout the lab
Crossing the “valley of death” between basic research and clinical practice
The Early Medical Development Lab was newly established as a graduate division of the Center for Next-Generation Medicine and iPS Cell Therapy Research, which was founded in 2020.
The lab teaches how to plan and carry out translational research to efficiently cross the “valley of death” between preclinical research and early-phase clinical trials, as well as how to plan and run Phase 0 and Phase 1 trials.
Students learn the know-how of early-phase medical development while gaining experience at the front line of early-phase clinical trials involving patients with cancer or intractable diseases and healthy volunteers, including trials of iPS cell transplantation.
The lab accepts inquiries, including requests for lab visits, at any time, whether you are a recent graduate or an experienced professional, and whether your background is clinical or basic research.
Key terms
- Early-phase clinical trial
- A clinical trial at the stage where a new drug or treatment is used in humans for the first time to confirm its safety and other aspects.
- Translational research
- Research that bridges the results of basic research to new treatments and diagnostics.
- First-in-human trial
- A trial in which a new drug or treatment is used in humans for the first time in the world.
ResearchResearch themes
Physicians who have themselves planned and carried out translational research and early-phase clinical trials (including investigator-initiated clinical trials) belong to the lab, supporting researchers across the university while advancing their own research and trials.
